CHARLESTON —
Skiers and snowboarders are gearing up for the start of the season.
Snowshoe Mountain opens Wednesday with two top to bottom runs and three lifts at the Snowshoe area and one top to bottom run and one lift at Silver Creek.
Heavy snow from Superstorm Sandy let White Grass Touring Center in Davis open its cross-country skiing trails in October.
But Canaan Valley, Oglebay and Winterplace plan to start their seasons in early December.
Snowshoe spokesman Dave Dekema says Sandy helped dumped more than 50 inches of snow in the mountains, while temperatures at higher elevations have been cold enough to support snowmaking operations.
He says after a late start last season, Snowshoe employees are excited to open early.
West Virginia resorts draw more than 800,000 skier visits a year.
