New River college names interim president

BECKLEY — Merle Dempsey has been named interim president of New River Community and Technical College.

The Beckley-based school announced Dempsey’s appointment Monday. He will start Nov. 3 and will serve until a permanent president is hired.

President Ted Spring resigned after being named president of Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C., in August. Spring’s last day at New River is Nov. 2.

Dempsey is an educational consultant. He retired as executive vice president of Southern Community and Technical College in 2010.
