CHARLESTON —
West Virginia can’t count on extra funding for Medicaid unless it fully follows the new health care law.
That’s the word from federal officials to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin administration late Monday.
The federal overhaul calls on states to expand their Medicaid programs. But the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that provision isn’t mandatory.
The federal government is pledging to cover the costs for states that fully expand. Tomblin asked whether there’s funding if West Virginia expands Medicaid only halfway or more slowly. Monday’s reply says the money is only for full expansions that follow the federal timetable.
