PINEVILLE —
Police have captured a suspect wanted in the slaying of a Wyoming County woman during a robbery.
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department tells media outlets that 20-year-old John New of Briar Creek was arrested Wednesday morning in Mingo County. New is charged with first-degree murder, grand larceny and daytime robbery.
Police say 60-year-old Elaine Birchfield of Brenton was killed Tuesday evening after she came home and interrupted a robbery. Birchfield’s truck was taken from the scene.
Gilbert police officers saw the truck Wednesday morning, stopped it and arrested New.
The cause of Birchfield’s death hasn’t been released.
Birchfield was a school bus driver whose route served Huff Consolidated School.
Wyoming County Schools Superintendent Frank Blackwell says grief counselors are at the school Wednesday.
