Resurgent GOP in W.Va. House herald session agenda

CHARLESTON — A new appeals court and a constitutional amendment targeting property taxes are on the wish list for Republicans in West Virginia’s House of Delegates.

GOP lawmakers on Tuesday outlined general goals for the session that begins Wednesday. They also include improving education and West Virginia’s business climate.

Republicans now hold 46 of 100 House seats, and spoke of.

House Minority Leader Tim Armstead offered specifics. The Kanawha County Republican said his caucus will seek an intermediate appeals court and a repeal of taxes on non-real estate property. 

Requiring voters to show photo identification is also on the agenda. That proposal drew immediate criticism from West Virginia’s elections chief, Secretary of State Natalie Tennant.

Republicans also will propose defining marriage as between one man and one woman in the state constitution.
