CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia's House of Delegates has rejected adding charter schools and other Republican-proposed changes to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's education bill.
Five GOP amendments failed Thursday. Of the others, one offered $1,000 bonuses to teachers who accept an alternative evaluation process. Another sought deeper Department of Education cuts.
Republicans also proposed an electronic textbook pilot program, and to restore the state schools superintendent's $175,000 salary cap.
The GOP holds 46 of 100 House seats following last year's election. Not all of Thursday's votes were along party lines.
The bill from Tomblin, a Democrat, includes revised educator hiring and transfers and giving counties more freedom over school calendars.
Spokeswoman Amy Shuler Goodwin said the governor supports the bill as-is.
Delegates are scheduled to vote Friday on whether to pass the legislation.
