CHARLESTON —
West Virginia’s use of stimulus funds to expand broadband in the state is under investigation by a federal agency.
The Charleston Gazette says the Department of Commerce’s Office of Inspector General is investigating whether more than $126 million in stimulus funds was spent “properly and efficiently.”
The inspector general also plans to determine whether there were any misrepresentations in West Virginia’s application for the money.
The investigation was requested by Oregon Rep. Greg Walden and Illinois Rep. John Shimkus after the newspaper published reports raising questions about the state’s stimulus spending.
West Virginia Homeland Security chief Jimmy Gianato tells the newspaper that state officials will cooperate with the investigation. He says he believes the state has a good program.
