Va. Tech plans memorial service for slain officer

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech will hold a memorial service for a slain university police officer on the one-year anniversary of his death.

The university says the service for Deriek W. Crouse will be held at noon Saturday in the Coliseum Lot.

A student from nearby Radford University ambushed and fatally shot Crouse on Dec. 8, 2011, as he was working a traffic stop on the Blacksburg campus. The gunman killed himself shortly afterward.

Virginia Tech President Charles Steger and Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Fllinchum are among the scheduled speakers for the memorial service.

A permanent memorial made of Hokie Stone will be dedicated at the end of the service.
