Va. woman killed by van while fleeing traffic stop

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Beach woman is dead after she was hit by a van while fleeing from a traffic stop.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya identified the victim as 49-year-old Kathleen White.

The accident occurred around 7 p.m. Monday on Interstate 264 in Norfolk.

Anaya tells media outlets that White was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by a trooper for suspicion of driving under the influence.

The trooper arrested the driver and then approached White to determine if she was intoxicated.

Anaya says White told the trooper she was on blood pressure medication and hadn't been drinking. She then ran into the westbound lanes and was hit by the van. She died at the scene.
