Covington man sentenced in infant son's death

COVINGTON, Va. (AP) — A Covington man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison in the death of his infant son.

Twenty-five-year-old Jared Ryan Meadows entered an Alford plea in August to first-degree murder. He also pleaded no contest to felony child abuse.

Media outlets report that Meadows received a 40-year sentence on the murder charge. A five-year sentence on the abuse charge will be served concurrently. He was sentenced Friday in Alleghany Circuit Court.

Meadows was accused of forcefully placing his son on the armrest of a couch in September 2011. An autopsy showed the infant suffered a skull fracture and other injuries.
