CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — An archaeological survey ahead of a planned expansion at the University of Virginia Cemetery has uncovered at least 30 previously unrecorded grave shafts.
The Charlottesville school announced the discovery on Friday.
Historic preservation architect Jody Lahendro says the identities of those who may be buried there and the dates are unknown. But officials say a survey will be conducted with thoroughness, care and respect to define the boundaries of the burial ground.
The university also will begin exploring alternative sites for expansion because of the discovery.
The school's cemetery was founded in 1828 and has served as the final resting place for many of its most prominent figures.
