RICHMOND, Va. —
A civil liberties group has asked Virginia’s inspector general to investigate last month’s detention of a former Marine who posted strident anti-government messages on Facebook.
Brandon Raub of Chesterfield County was held for psychiatric evaluation for a week before a judge ordered his release, ruling that an involuntary commitment order contained no allegation or basis to hold him.
In a letter Friday to the inspector general, the Charlottesville-based Rutherford Institute says officials may have abused the state’s involuntary commitment statutes to punish a citizen for speech that they found distasteful. The organization, which provided a lawyer for Raub, also raises due process concerns.
The inspector general’s office did not immediately return telephone and email messages to The Associated Press.
