RICHMOND, Va. —
A Fredericksburg couple has claimed the second largest jackpot ever won in Virginia.
Media outlets report that David and Nancy Howell claimed a $217 million Powerball jackpot Thursday.
David Howell bought the winning ticket for the Feb. 6 drawing at a self-service machine at Richmond International Airport before leaving for a business trip.
The ticket matched all five numbers plus the Powerball.
They chose the one-time cash option payment of about $136 million before taxes.
Both are employees for the Department of Defense. David Howell is a computer scientist and Nancy Howell is a project manager.
J.R. Triplett of Winchester won a $239 million Mega Millions jackpot in 2004.
