Ex-Albemarle lieutenant charged with embezzlement

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. —  A former Albemarle County police lieutenant has been charged with stealing $380 from a department petty cash fund.

Media outlets report Ernest Allen III was charged this week with one felony count of embezzlement of public funds.

The 51-year-old Allen is a 27-year veteran of the department. Allen told police he took the money last month from the cash fund he managed. The money was discovered missing this month during a quarterly audit.

Col. Steve Sellers says Allen has repaid the missing funds and has cooperated with the investigation.

Allen, who resigned Monday, declined comment.

County records show Allen was paid $87,000 annually and has filed for federal bankruptcy protection three times.
