Va. man kills self on school lot after shooting

JONESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Police say a Pennington Gap man killed himself on a high school parking lot after he lured two people into a wooded area and shot one of them.

Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons says police believe 56-year-old Hurley Eugene Underwood tricked the victim into digging his own grave before wounding him.

Parsons tells media outlets that Underwood lured 19-year-old Caleb Lawson of Pennington Gap and his girlfriend into a wooded area under the guise of helping him dig a deer trap.

The sheriff says Lawson was shot twice while he was in the hole. He escaped the hole and he and his girlfriend fled.

Underwood drove to a parking lot at Lee High School. He shot himself after he was confronted by a police officer and died at the scene.
