UVa-Wise football player charged in shooting

NORTON, Va. (AP) — A University of Virginia-Wise football player has been dismissed from the team and suspended from school after being charged with shooting a woman.

School spokeswoman Kathy Still says 21-year-old Melquan Huntley of Newport News was kicked off the team Tuesday, a day after his arrest. Dean of Students Jewell Worley suspended Huntley pending the outcome of the criminal charges.

Norton police Capt. Roger Cooke says 18-year-old Jahnae Foster was shot in the head at Huntley's home last Wednesday. She remains hospitalized at Johnson City Medical Center.

Huntley, a third-year student who played fullback, is charged with shooting in an occupied dwelling and unlawful shooting of a person. He has been released on $50,000 bond. Arraignment is set for Dec. 3. A court official said Huntley hasn't hired a lawyer yet.
