CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginians chose their last governor just five months ago, but Sen. Jeff Kessler believes it pays to plan for the future.
The Marshall County Democrat and powerful Senate Judiciary Committee chairman has filed pre-candidacy papers while he explores a run for governor in 2012.
Kessler said Wednesday that he's been a supporter of Gov. Joe Manchin, but because of state law Manchin can't run for a third consecutive term.
Kessler has been thinking about a possible run for governor for some time.
He says building statewide name recognition in all 55 counties is a hard task, which makes the early start a good strategy.
