Va. declares emergency in advance of winter storm

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in advance of a winter storm expected early Friday through Saturday.

Wednesday’s declaration authorizes state agencies to assist local governments responding to a storm that could bring high winds and up to 20 inches of snow to the northern and western parts of the state.

Forecasters are calling for up to three-quarters of an inch of freezing rain for much of western and southwestern Virginia and heavy rains and high winds in southeastern Virginia.

McDonnell said road crews and the Virginia National Guard are prepared to respond, and urged residents to do the same.
