Police: Men behead dragon sculpture

SALEM, Mass. — Police arrested two men who authorities say beheaded an ice sculpture of a dragon — and then tried to steal the remains of the carving.

William B. Hare, 47, and Rajendra John Srivastava, 30, were charged with taking the severed head, which previously resided in front of a shop in Salem.

A police officer spotted Srivastava carrying “a large chunk of ice” along the pedestrian mall, and made him return it. But Patrolman Tracey O’Leary minutes later noticed the men had returned and took the icy cranium a second time.

Hare, who said he was a doctor, protested and said he could do whatever he wanted. He was arrested and taken to jail.

Srivastava was charged with receiving stolen property.

The ice sculpture is part of Salem’s So Sweet Chocolate and Ice Sculpture Festival, where many businesses exhibit the frigid artwork.

The sculptures represent a real expense for businesses, according to police.
