WELCH —
Bad directions from a GPS system sent a tractor trailer searching for the Walmart supercenter in McDowell County over a narrow, one-lane mountainous road Monday morning, where it subsequently struck a guardrail and straddled an embankment, police said.
The accident was reported at 1:30 a.m. after the GPS system directed the tractor trailer off of U.S. Route 52 where the Walmart store is located and instead onto the narrow Airport Road located between Maitland and Kimball, Trooper B.D. Gillespie of the West Virginia State Police Welch Detachment, said.
Gillespie said the tractor trailer struck the guardrail, and straddled the embankment, along a narrow curve. The tractor trailer had to be pulled out of the embankment area from a wrecker. No injuries were reported.
Gillespie said the driver wasn’t familiar with the area, and didn’t realize he should have ignored the directions given by the GPS system.
