Obituary

Bernice Lynn (Lilly) Hammond

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Bernice Lynn (Lilly) Hammond, 60, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009 at her home in St. Aug.ine, Fla. Born on December 17, 1948 in Princeton, W.Va., she was the youngest daughter of William and Mildred (McGinnis) Lilly. She is a graduate of Cox High School in Virginia Beach, earning her Bachelors Degree in Education from Bridgewater College (Virginia), and Masters and Doctoral Degrees in Administration and Super-vision from the University of Maryland, College Park. Bernice began her teaching career in September, 1972 at Stevensville Middle School (Queen Anne's County, Md.) where she served first as a teacher, and later as the assistant principal. In 2005, she retired as the county-wide Supervisor of Career and Technology Education. She was currently employed at the TPC Sawgrass Golf Shop in Ponte Vedra Beach. Bernice was known to her family and friends as a gracious, generous, kind, patient, thoughtful, and loving person. Bernice loved running, biking, cross-country skiing, swimming, scuba-diving, gardening, baking, and golf. She is survived by her mother, Mary Clem, also of St. Aug.ine; her sister, Mary B. Compton of Ponte Vedra Beach; several nieces and nephews, including Catherine Flinn and family of Austin, Texas and Susan and David Reeves and family of Ponte Vedra Beach; stepsisters, Becky Echols, Sue Bryant, and Barbara Walker; stepbrother, Pete Lilly and their families, all of West Virginia. She is also survived by numerous other family members and countless friends.

A memorial celebration of Bernice's life will be held on September 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bernice's name to The American Heart Association Memorial, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
