Hilltoppers defeat Lions

WEST LIBERTY — The best offense in the WVIAC, that of the West Liberty Hilltoppers, faced off against the most improved offense, that of the Concord Mountain Lions, in an offensive showcase. In the end, the playoff-bound Hilltoppers beat the Lions 64-42 Saturday at West Liberty.

The host (10-1, 8-0) struck quickly, just 16 seconds in the game,as Ryan Travis hit Kashif Walls (Mike Blewitt kick) with a 71-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage, making it 7-0 at 14:44 in the first quarter.

Concord (6-5, 4-4) made it 7-7 (Brandon Strupp kick) on their first possession as Brian Kennedy ended a 14-play, 48-yard drive with a three-yard run at 9:30 left in the first. The drive was set up by Kennedy’s 41-yard kickoff return and featured a 15-yard Kennedy run and a 17-yard Steven Hearons to Dennis Cole pass.

WL responded in short order as Eddie Hills ran it from seven yards to make the score 13-7 (kick blocked) to end an eight-play, 72-yard drive at 5:52 left in the first. The drive featured three Kevon Calhoun runs of 14, 11 and 23 yards.

The second quarter started much like the first for West Liberty as Zach Amedro hit Travis with a 22-yard scoring pass with 14:52 left in the half, making it 20-7 (Blewitt kick). The three-play, 54-yard drive featured a 21-yard run by Amendro and an 11-yard Calhoun run.

Concord made it 20-14 (Strupp kick) at the 8:24 point as Hearons hit Kennedy with a 15-yard pass for a score. Hearons hit Thomas Mayo with a 12-yard pass and Kennedy ran for 34 yards during the six-play, 56-yard drive.

West Liberty made it 27-14 (Blewitt kick) as it wrapped up a four-play, 43-yard drive with an Amendro to Walls 32-yard pass at 3:09 left in the half. The drive also featured an 11-yard pass connection from Amendro to Walls.

Concord made it 27-21 (Strupp kick) with a 10-yard Hearons to Mayo pass at: 42 left in the half. The nine-play, 65-yard drive saw a 10-yard run by Cole, a 10-yard Hearons to Mayo pass and a 14-yard Hearons to Jared Brown pass.

The half ended with a 46-yard field goal from Blewitt, ending a six-play, 27-yard drive and making the score 30-21. The drive included a 13-yard Amendro to Willie Walker pass.

For the third time in as many quarters, West Liberty opened with a score as they made it 36-21 (kick failed) with 11:54 left. The score, which ended a five-play, 36-yard drive, was the second Amendro to Travis touchdown pass, a 15-yard one.

A two-play, 70-yard drive by Concord made it 36-28 (Strupp kick) as Kennedy ran 59 yards with 11:23 left in the third. The play was set up by a 28-yard Cole kick-off return and an 11-yard Hearons to Nathan Tanner pass.

The score went to 43-28 (Blewitt kick) WL on the next drive as Jimmy Burress ran it in from one yard out with 9:33 gone in the third. Calhoun had a 31-yard run during the four-play, 43-yard drive.

The Hilltoppers made the score 50-28 (Blewitt kick) with 3:11 left in the third as Calhoun ran it in from two yards out. The seven-play, 75-yard drive featured Amendro hitting Walker with a 19-yard pass, Hills for 15 yards and Walls for 32 yards.

The score went to 57-28 as Amendro hit Hills for a 26-yard score (Blewitt kick) with 1:25 left in the third. The two-play, 45-yard drive featured a 15-yard pass interference penalty against Andre Coleman.

Kennedy set up the last Hilltopper score when he was stripped of the ball by Raphael Johnson and it was recovered at the Concord 29-yard line. Four plays later, Hills ran it in from 19 yards to make the score 64-28 (Blewitt kick) with 11:19 left in the game.

A three-play, 59-yard drive made the score 64-35 (Strupp kick) with 10:33 left in the game as Kennedy ran it in from 23 yards out. The drive also featured Evin Dusold hitting Tanner with a 20-yard pass and Kennedy ran it for 16 yards.

Concord concluded the day’s scoring as Cole ran it in from five yards out with 2:08 left in the game, making it 64-42 West Liberty (Strupp kick). The nine-play, 65-yard drive featured Dusold hitting Mayo with a 13-yard pass, and Tanner for 11 yards, plus Cole ran for 11 yards.

West Liberty was led by Calhoun with 98 yards on 13 rushing attempts with a touchdown. Amendro went 28-37 for 377 yards and four touchdowns. Travis caught nine passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns and Walker caught nine passes for 93 yards. Walls had five catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Walls had 170 yards total offense (146 receiving, 39 kick-off returns and -15 rushing), Travis 135 yards (all receiving) and Calhoun 103 (98 rushing, five receiving). Jayson Keener had 13 tackles, nine solo and Clay Beeler 12, eight solo.

Concord was led by Kennedy with 234 yards rushing and three touchdowns in 27 attempts, plus 321 total yards (84 yards in returns, and 43 yards receiving). Hearons went 19-32 for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Mayo caught 11 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. Cole had 166 yards total offense (76 rushing, 17 receiving and 73 in kick-off returns). Joe Greenway had nine tackles, five solo.
