ATHENS — The cold, damp weather at Callaghan Stadium Saturday did nothing to cool the offensive firepower on display as the Concord Mountain Lions and Seton Hill Golden Griffins combined for more than 1,400 total yards of offense, more than 300 from WVIAC Offensive Player of the Week Brian Kennedy alone, as the Mountain Lions defeated their guests 52-34 in Concord’s homecoming game.
Kennedy opened up events with a 47-yard kick-off return to the Seton Hill 39-yard line. Eight plays and 39 yards later, he scored on a three-yard run, making the score 7-0 (Brandon Strupp kick) at 12:15 of the first quarter. The drive featured a 24-yard Steven Hearons to Thomas Mayo connection.
The Golden Griffins tied it 7-7 as D.J. Lenehan hit Samuel Tranks with a five-yard touchdown pass with 3:48 left in the first quarter (Steve Padilla kick). Lenehan hit Tranks with a 22-yard pass and ran for 15 yards on third and 14 to keep the TD drive alive.
Seton Hill went ahead 14-7 (Padilla kick) as Zach Delo pounced on a Lenehan fumble in the end zone with 14:51 left in the first half. The three-play, 53-yard drive saw Lenehan hit Delo with a 24-yard pass.
Concord tied the score 14-14 (Strupp kick) as Kennedy ran it in from 24 yards with 7:46 left in the half. The four-play, 45-yard drive saw Dennis Cole rush for 17 yards earlier.
Kennedy scored his third touchdown of the half, a 56-yard run, to wrap up a six-play, 96-yard drive with 1:34 left to make the score 21-14 (Strupp kick). Mayo had a 10-yard end-around run, Cole had a 12-yard run, and Kennedy had a 14-yard run.
Kennedy made it 28-14 (Strupp kick) as he had a 76-yard run on Concord’s first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. The score came with 12:20 left in the quarter.
Another one-play scoring drive, this one an 80-yard drive, made the score 35-14 (Strupp kick) as Hearons hit Mayo for an 80-yard score.
Strupp made it 38-14 as he wrapped up a seven-play, 69-yard scoring drive with 10.7 seconds left in the third quarter with a 34-yard field goal. Kennedy had runs of 10 and 68 yards during the drive.
Seton Hill made it 38-22 (two-point conversion was successful) as Lenehan hit Tranks with a 14-yard scoring pass with 13:16 left in the game. Lenehan and Tranks connected earlier on a 13-yard pass and Lenehan hit Anthony Armstead with an 11-yard pass part of the 12-play, 68-yard drive.
Cole made it 45-22 (Strupp kick) as he ran it in from 38 yards out, ending a seven-play, 57-yard drive, with 9:06 left. The drive saw Concord punter Brad Cox rush for 18 yards on fourth and 6 to keep the drive alive. The drive was set up by an interception by Concord nose tackle Daniel Stone.
Seton Hill made it 45-28 (conversion failed) as Lenehan hit Armstead with a 10-yard score with 6:17 left. The 13-play, 78-yard drive saw a 22 yard Lenehan to Tranks pass, a 10-yard run by Antwarn Jones, a 15-yard Lenehan to Sean Randall pass and a 42-yard Lenehan to Randall connection.
Concord’s reserves made it 52-28 (Strupp kick) as Phillip Young rushed it in from seven yards out, ending a 6-play, 40-yard drive with 2:27 left. Young rushed for 21 yards two plays earlier.
The final scoring of the game came with 38.6 seconds left as Lenehan hit D.J. Pearson (conversion failed), making it 52-34. The 8-play, 62-yard drive saw R.J. Butler rush for 12 yards, and Lenehan hit an 11 pass to Armstead.
Concord was led by Kennedy, who broke Chris Hairston’s Concord single-game rushing record, with 296 yards in 16 attempts with four touchdowns, plus 13 yards receiving and 82 yards kick returning for 391 total yards. Hearons went 7-15 for 167 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Mayo caught five passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. Cornerback Justin McKissick had 14 tackles, nine solo.
Seton Hill was led by Butler who had four carries for 38 yards. Lenehan went 37-66 for 462 yards, with one interception and four touchdowns. Tranks caught nine passes for 102 yards and two scores, while Randall caught five passes for 103 yards. Robert Jordan had eight tackles, six solo.
Concord (5-3, 3-3) plays UNC-Pembroke next Saturday at Callaghan Stadium. Game time is 4 p.m.
