Tigerettes win sectional game

PRINCETON — This week was a very good one for the Princeton Tigerettes. At Oak Hill on Feb. 24, the Tigerettes scored an exciting sectional win over Nicholas County, 50-47. Princeton defeated Bluefield, 66-57, in a hard-fought game on Feb. 19.

The Tigerettes are scheduled to play Greenbrier East in the sectional finals on Feb. 26 at Oak Hill.

TIGERETTES—50, NICHOLAS COUNTY—47

This sectional contest was the rubber match between the two teams. At Nicholas County early in the season, the Lady Grizzlies defeated Princeton in overtime. Recently, the Tigerettes beat Nicholas County at home.

This game was a nail-biter. During the game, the Tigerettes once trailed by 13 points and were behind 31-19 at the half.

In the second half, Princeton picked up their defense.

“Our second half defense was the best it has been all season. It was a fine team defensive effort,” coach Debbie Ball said.

The Tigerettes allowed Nicholas County only 18 points during the last two quarters. They held talented point guard Madison Martin to no field goals in the second half.  Martin did end up as the game’s high scorer with 21 points.

Sparked by Krystle White’s who took a critical charge the Princeton’s defense rose to new heights. With 51 seconds remaining, Princeton trailed 47-45. Cheyanne Walker tied the score with two foul shots. McKenzie Akers, who led the offensive charge in the second half, drilled a three-pointer with seconds remaining to win the game.

Offensively, Akers paced Princeton with 19 points, including three goals beyond the arc. Cheyanne Walker hit the two critical late foul shots and bucketed 12 points while Krystle White chipped in with nine points.

Rounding out the Princeton scoring were Hannah Preservati (four points), Brittany Lankford (three points), Kendria Perkins (two points), and Mary Beth Miller (one point).

Brittany Lankford led the Princeton rebounders with eight boards.

During the game, Kendria Perkins sustained a knee injury. The extent of the injury was unknown at the press deadline. Two days earlier Cydney Graham was in a weather-related car accident and suffered a dislocated shoulder.

TIGERETTES—66, BLUEFIELD—57

Princeton led after the first quarter 16-14, but in the second period, the Beavers got hot and surged to a 35-26 advantage. Near the end of the half, Kendria Perkins and Brittany “CD” Lankford tallied baskets to cut the deficit to 35-30. Seconds before the end of the first two quarters, Krystle White launched a mammoth 38-foot shot that found the mark making the score 35-33, Bluefield.

The Tigerettes’ momentum extended into the third quarter as they captured a 43-36 lead.

During their critical run, Princeton outscored their opponents 17-2. Princeton did not relinquish the lead although Bluefield at one point cut their deficit to four points.

Both teams’ accuracy from the field was about the same. The Tigerettes shot 42 percent while Bluefield connected on 41 percent of their attempts. Princeton had a commanding

32-22 advantage on the boards. The Beavers committed fewer turnovers than the Tigerettes.

All six of the Tigerettes who played made important contributions to the victory.

Mary Beth Miller tallied 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second half. She also snared five offense rebounds and converted several of them.

Krystle White bucketed 13 points including her monster three-pointer.

Brittany Lankford recorded her first career double double scoring a career-high 13 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.

Kendria Perkins tallied a career-high 11 points and handed out four assists.

Cheyanne Walker registered six of her eight points in the critical third period.

Playing point guard, Hannah Preservati performed admirably collecting six points and dishing out six assists. The Tigerettes’ regular point guard, McKenzie Akers, was sidelined with an ankle injury.
