PRINCETON — Newly installed Tiger varsity starting point guard, Ryan Meadows, and the entire girls’ varsity team received the Princeton Times Player of the Week honors. The boys’ award was based on performances at the Feb. 16 Hurricane game, the Feb. 20 Bluefield contest, and the Feb. 23 PikeView encounter. The girls’ honors covered the Bluefield game of Feb. 19 and the Feb. 24 sectional game against Nicholas County.
Meadows, who has spent most of the season playing for the Tigers’ freshman squad, has had an immediate positive impact when he was elevated to the varsity team. He scored 22 points against Hurricane, 15 versus Bluefield, and added 10 points against PikeView. In addition, in both the Hurricane and Bluefield games he dished out six assists. His 22-point performance was a season-high for a Tiger. Moreover, his three consecutive double-digit games was a first for a Tiger this season.
“Varsity basketball is more intense and much faster than middle school and freshman ball,” Meadows said.
Obviously, he is handling the transition very well.
During this period, several Tigers had strong performances. Tevin Allen pumped in 17 points in the Hurricane game. O. B. Pannell hit for 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds
against Bluefield. Adam Mills tallied 14 points including two long-range baskets in the PikeView contest.
The girls’ award is a team award. In the Bluefield game, all six of the Tigerettes who played made key contributions to the victory. In the Nicholas County contest, team defense in the second half was a major factor in the win.
