PRINCETON — At the sectional tournament on March 1, the fourth-seeded Princeton Tigers defeated the fifth-seeded Riverside Warriors 56-52 to advance in the tournament and record their second win of the season.
Princeton faced the first-seeded Greenbrier East Spartans on March 3 and were beaten soundly, 96-63. This setback concluded the Tigers’ basketball season.
The tournament was held at Oak Hill High School.
TIGERS—63,
GREENBRIER EAST—96
The Spartans dominated virtually every facet of play in registering the lopsided win.
The Tigers led briefly at 8-7. The Spartans then proceeded to go on a 26-2 run and the eventual winner of the game was not in doubt. After the first quarter, Greenbrier East had a whopping 31-9 lead which they expanded to 58-19 at the half. During the last two quarters, the Tigers outscored their opponent 44-38, but this performance was achieved primarily against Spartan reserves.
Greenbrier East shot over 50 percent from the field while Princeton made 35 percent of their field goal attempts. The Spartans canned eight three-pointers while the Tigers connected on four long-range shots. Greenbrier East forced 23 Tiger miscues many of which resulted in Spartan fast break points These subsequent layups contributed substantially to Greenbrier East’s high field goal percentage. In contrast, the Spartans committed only nine turnovers.
The Spartans’ rebound advantage was narrow, but many of the Tiger rebounds came when the winner of the game had already been decided.
Tevin Allen paced the Princeton attack with 19 points, including two goals from beyond the arc. Robert Redd tallied 12 points and hauled in six rebounds. Adams Mills and Ryan Meadows each contributed eight points. David Brewster bucketed six points and pulled in six rebounds. Rounding out Princeton’s scoring were Nick Branson (four points), Tre’ Hopkins (two points), Sean Williams (two points), and Quwuize Lee (two points). Williams also contributed three steals.
Spartan Jalen Walker hit for 21 points and led 10 teammates in scoring. Walker played half the game.
Without a senior on the squad, Princeton’s prospects for an improved record next year are good. All of the players on the squad at times showed flashes of talent. Coach Ernie Gilliard commented, “Next year we need to be more consistent, shoot better, and defend better.”
TIGERS—56,
RIVERSIDE—52
The Tigers trailed most of the game and after three quarters were behind 36-31. In the final quarter keyed by a three-point play by Sean Williams, Princeton got hot outscoring their opposition 25-16 to register the win.
Adam Mills and Tevin Allen paced the fourth quarter rally tallying a combined 15 points. Overall, Mills pumped in 14 points while Allen added 10 points. Tre’ Hopkins bucketed eight markers. Sean Williams, Jordan Harris, and Ryan Meadows each contributed five points. Nick Branson and David Brewster added four and two points, respectively.
