Tigers JV basketball team finishes strong

PRINCETON —  The Princeton Tigers’ junior varsity squad (10-7) finished the 2009-2010 season on a strong note. The team won six of their last seven games, including the season finale against Bluefield, 43-41, on Feb. 27.

In the Bluefield contest, the Tigers trailed 24-11 at the break. Princeton completely dominated the second half to pull out the exciting come-from-behind victory. Clutch foul shooting, not usually a team strength, was a critical factor in securing the victory. For the game, Princeton connected on seven of eight shots from the charity line. They made six of six foul shots (Shemaiah Adams 4-of-4, and Lamont Lee 2-of-2) in the pressured-packed fourth quarter.

The Tigers received balanced point production in recording the win. Darnell Palmer bucketed nine points to lead the scoring while Shane Musick and David Brewster both contributed six points. Austin Southcott tossed in five points. Other Princeton scorers included Lamont Lee, Shemaiah Adams, and Jack Hickman all with four points. Rounding out the scoring were Brandon Fulp with three points and Matt Jennelle with two points.

For the season, Princeton averaged 54 points a game, while surrendering 50 points a contest. The Tigers did not have any players who averaged scoring in double digits for several reasons. First, playing time for particular players was often limited because so many players (15) saw action with the team. Second, several players often would split their playing time between the junior varsity and varsity teams.

The Tigers’ leading point producers were David Brewster (8.7 points per game), Shane Musick (8.6 ppg), and Tre’ Hopkins (8.1 ppg). All three of these players also saw considerable action with the varsity squad.

Pacing Princeton’s three-point shooting were Shane Musick and Brandon Fulp. Shane averaged 1.3 three pointers per game while Brandon made 1.1 per contest.

Leading foul shooters were Brandon Fulp (82 percent), Shane Musick (79 percent), and David Brewster (73 percent.)

Guiding the junior varsity team through the season was a coaching staff headed by Randy Wilson.
