Aug. 19
• DOMESTIC BATTERY, OBSTRUCTING AN OFFICER: Dep. E.P. Parks and Dep. J.D. Gills responded to Shawnee Mobile Home Park, where a woman advised her boyfriend returned home intoxicated and began beating her. The woman alleged the boyfriend picked up a dresser and threw it on top of her, again beating the dresser while she was trapped under it. The woman told officers she attempted to escape the residence and that the boyfriend pulled her back inside, allegedly shoving his fingers down her throat to keep her from screaming. The woman later crawled through a window and sought help. Officers located the suspect at the residence, where he allegedly refused to answer the door and declined to show his hands until officers instructed him several times to do so. George Peter Dempsey, 45, of Lashmeet, was arrested.
Aug. 20
• GRAND LARCENY: Sgt. G.W. Woods received a report from an Old Bramwell Road resident, who reported that a 1996 Subaru Legacy was stolen from his residence overnight. The man reported the keys were left in the vehicle.
• VIOLATION OF PROTECTIVE ORDER: Maj. D.B. Bailey arrested Richard Donald Taylor, 33, of Matoaka, for violating a protective order.
• PETIT LARCENY: Sgt. G.W. Woods received a report that a chainsaw was stolen from RSC on Oakvale Road.
• BURGLARY, PETIT LARCENY: Dep. J.D. Gills received a report from a Brushfork resident advising that someone broke into an outbuilding and stole a weed eater. The equipment was registered in the National Crime Information Center Database.
• DUI: Dep. J.D. Gills responded to reports of a vehicle stuck at Jimmy Lewis Lake. The male subject advised he had been run off the road by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, but the officer reported smelling alcohol on the complainant and noticing that he could not stand on his own. The man allegedly told the officer he had drank a 12-pack of beer before the incident. A preliminary test revealed the man's blood-alcohol content to be 0.181, which is over the legal limit. Bobby Boyles, 56, of Bluefield, was charged with DUI.
• PETIT LARCENY: A Bluefield resident advised Capt. M.L. Gills that someone stole his iPod from his home.
Aug. 21
• PETIT LARCENY: A 15-year-old female reported someone stole her BlackBerry from her purse while it was inside the PikeView High School gymnasium. Sgt. S.J. Cary filed the report.
• DOMESTIC BATTERY: Dep. J.D. Gills responded to Breeze Hill Mobile Home Park, where a complainant advised his stepson attacked him during an argument over cigarettes and struck him in the face. The stepfather also reported that he had seen the stepson snorting some type of pill before the altercation. Dep. G.C. Paitsel located the suspect, who exhibited signs of striking someone and appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Brandon Howerton, 21, address unknown, was charged with domestic battery.
• BREAKING AND ENTERING, PETIT LARCENY: Dep. E.P. Parks responded to Ring Street, where a complainant advised more than one subject had pried a porch board loose and gained entrance to the home. Several items were reported stolen. The investigation was ongoing.
Aug. 22
• DOMESTIC BATTERY, DOMESTIC ASSAULT, BRANDISHING: Dep. W.E. Rose responded to New Kirk Street, where a female complainant advised she had argued with her boyfriend and that he had pushed her down into a chair and grabbed a knife. Her nephew, who witnessed the event, then told officers he intervened, fearing for his aunt's safety. The girlfriend allegedly told the officer she and her boyfriend cursed at each other during an argument over her wrecked car, when he then brandished a knife, held it to her throat and punched her in the jaw. Frank David Newman, 52, of Princeton, was charged. During arraignment before Magistrate Rick Fowler, the suspect also allegedly acted out in court and attempted to evade Sgt. S.J. Cary's control on the way back to the courthouse. He was then charged with obstructing/resisting an officer and disorderly conduct.
• HIT AND RUN, STRIKING AND UNATTENDED VEHICLE: Dep. G.C. Paitsel responded to GlenWood Park Retirement Village, where a complainant advised that someone struck her vehicle while parked in the lot there.
• PETIT LARCENY: Dep. W.E. Rose responded to Mellow Lane in Bluefield, where a complainant advised someone broke into the tool box on his work truck and stole more than $700 in tools.
Aug. 23
• PETIT LARCENY: An Old Bluefield Road resident advised Capt. M.L. Gills that someone stole a lawn mower, a tire and batteries, from the area in front of a garage.
• SHOPLIFTING: Sgt. S.J. Cary responded to J.C. Penney at Mercer Mall, where a complainant advised a suspect was detained after being seen placing a pair of shorts in a plastic bag and attempting to leave. The suspect was also allegedly found in possession of clothing stolen from Sears. David Franklin Gardner, 28, of Bluefield, was charged with shoplifting.
• BURGLARY, GRAND LARCENY: Dep. J.R. Coburn received a burglary report involving a Mount Olive Road residence. The complainant advised someone entered her home by tearing a hole in a window screen. A computer and several items of jewelry were reported missing.
Aug. 24
• VIOLATION OF A PROTECTIVE ORDER: Dep. W.E. Rose arrested Susan Elizabeth Wright, 53, of Bluefield, for violating a protective order.
• BREAKING AND ENTERING, GRAND LARCENY: Sgt. S.J. Cary responded to the former Lowe's site on Clover Dew Dairy Road, where a shop foreman reported someone entered the building and stole three pieces of equipment.
• BREAKING AND ENTERING, PETIT LARCENY: Sgt. G.W. Woods responded to Old Pisgah Road, where a complainant advised he had gone to the building owned by Dewar Inc. to meet AEP. When he got there, someone had removed the wiring and other items from the building.
Aug. 25
• BURGLARY, CAPIAS: Dep. A.M. Ballard and Sheriff D.B. Meadows responded to a home invasion complaint on Hope Lane. The complainant advised she awoke to find a thin man wearing a dark T-shirt, ball cap and blue shorts fleeing her home with her purse. The woman pursued the man, but was not able to catch up with him. Officers later located the suspect in the same neighborhood and detained him for questioning. Eventually, Jerry Lee Thompson, 48, of Princeton, allegedly confessed to entering the woman's home and taking her purse.
• PETIT LARCENY: Sgt. S.J. Cary arrested Wesley Kurt Milam Jr., 26, of Bluefield, on multiple warrants for petit larceny and destruction of property complaints filed by Cpl. S.A. Sommers.
