Dec. 25
BATTERY, DUI: Dep. J.D. Gills and Dep. J.E. Coulter responded to a Brushfork residence in reference to a complaint of public disturbance. Outside the residence, the deputies observed that one male subject had another male subject pined to the bed of a pickup truck. When the first subject released the second subject, the second subject struck a third male subject in the face. The deputies then gained control of the second subject and observed evidence of intoxication. John B. Hill, 28, of Lebanon, Va. was placed under arrest for battery and driving under the influence.
BREAKING AND ENTERING: Dep. M.S. Horn responded to Warden Avenue in Bluewell where a breaking and entering had occurred while victims were out of town. The deputy observed that the couch that was pushed up against the living room window was pushed to the middle of the room and various items were tossed around inside the residence. The victims reported a laptop computer, portable DVD player, and miscellaneous costume jewelry, with a total estimated value of $880, stolen. The investigation was ongoing.

LEAVING A SCENE, DRIVERS REVOKED: Dep. J.E. Coulter responded to a report of a single vehicle accident on Old Bluefield Princeton Road. The complainant reported that the driver of the vehicle had fled on foot. Coulter then traveled to the residence of a complainant of a stolen car matching the vehicle in the crash, where the complainant reported he had woke up to find the vehicle, registered to his wife, missing. The complainant's wife reported she always kept a spare key in the glove box of her car. Later, Coulter responded back to the residence, where troopers had responded to a report of a domestic disturbance. Coulter spoke with the vehicle owner, who said her husband had contacted Mercer County 911 reporting he knew who stole the vehicle, then provided a fictitious name the wife remembered to be a former manager of Taco Bell. After concluding his report did not make sense and that he matched the suspect description, Coulter planned to charge the complainant with driving while revoked and leaving a scene of an accident with property damage.

GRAND LARCENY: Dep. J.E. Coulter responded to a report that a suspect had taken a victim's vehicle from her home where the suspect stays periodically. The suspect advised he was going to his mother's home. After an hour, the victim reported she tried to contact the suspect via text message with no reply before contacting the suspect’s mother, who reported he had not come to her house. Later, the victim found the suspect in her vehicle in a Lashmeet parking lot. She approached the vehicle and tried to talk to the suspect, who reportedly tried to drive off with the victim hanging from the window of the vehicle as she attempted to get the keys from the ignition. The suspect fled from the parking lot. Coulter patrolled the area in attempts to locate the vehicle with no success. Later, the victim reported that the vehicle had been returned to her.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY, CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT INJURY, DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY: Dep. A.M. Ballard and Dep. G.C. Paitsel responded to Jimmy Lewis Lake on a report of a burglary in process. Upon arrival, a complainant reported that three subjects had come to his residence to inflict harm on him. The complainant advised that one subject tried to force his way into the residence, and that e had damaged his deck and grabbed a piece of wood to strike him, while another subject threw a rock through a bedroom window. While speaking with deputies, the complainant received a phone call from the subjects, who verbally threatened him, and requested to meet at the end of Red Oak Ridge Road to fight. The deputies responded to the location, where they arrested Christopher Mark Phelps, 27, of Bluefield, Justin Keith Coeburn, 19, of Princeton and Timothy Jason Howard, 29, of Bluefield for conspiracy to inflict bodily injury. Phelps and Coeburn were also charged with additional conspiracy to inflict harm for traveling to the victim's residence, and Phelps was charged with attempt to commit burglary.
DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY: Cpl. S.A. Sommers received a report from Berkeley Street, in Princeton, that a suspect had come to the complainant's residence intoxicated and wanting to spend the night. When the victim refused to allow the suspect to stay, he reportedly broke the viewing window out of the front door and a bedroom window, causing an estimated $300 in damage.
Dec. 29
SHOPLIFTING: Dep. J.D. Ellison responded to Mercer Mall, where an alleged shoplifter was in custody at Sears. The suspect was caught stealing a 20-volt drill and tools, with a value of $259. The suspect was issued a summons and escorted off the property.
