BISHOP, Va. —
Frank D. Bennett, age 96, of Bishop, Va., died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 at his home. He was born July 15, 1916 at Wadesboro, N.C. to the late Dexter E. and Clara Jackson Bennett. Mr. Bennett graduated from Kimball High School. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Naval Air Force with the rank of aviation metalsmith, third class and was a member of the American Legion. A longtime member of the Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bishop, Va., he served as chairman of the deacon board and served as church treasurer. Mr. Bennett was a coal miner, retiring after 37 years with Bishop Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William E. Bennett; three sisters, Mary L. Franklin, Ethel Bean, and Eleanor Lambright.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 71 years, Ethel H. Bennett; two sons, William E. Bennett and wife, Patricia of Bishop, Va., and Roderick A. Bennett and wife, Edie of Voorhees, N.J.; two daughters, Mina Bennett Williams of Charlotte, N.C. and Olivia Stephens and husband, Steve of Jonesboro, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Robert L. Stephens III, Stephanie L. Stephens, Roderick L. Bennett, Christa L. Stephens, Nichole J. Denson, Emanuel A. Bennett, and Mina Bennett Gray; six great-grandchildren, Isaiah Bennett, Ashley Igbokidi, Noah Bennett, Olivia Henderson, Sakari Denson, and Kayo Pouchous; one brother, Dexter L. Bennett; and one sister, Daisy B. Beamer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church at Bishop, Va. with the Reverend Joseph Moore Jr. and the Reverend Robert Dykes officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens at Bluewell, W.Va., where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va. Pallbearers will be Michael Bennett, Donald Bennett, Mark Lambright, Emanuel Bennett, Eddie Beamer, Bernard Murphy, Eric Sherman, Michael Bennett, II, Donald Bean, and Reginald Lambright, Jr.
The family will receive friends at the church from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.
