BLUEFIELD —

Mary Elizabeth Conlee Black, “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God. For anyone who enters Gods rest also rest from his work, just as God did from his.” Heb. 4:9-10

Born January 10, 1920 in Maybeury, W.Va., daughter of the late Charlie Conlee and Mollie Bennett Conlee. Entered her “heavenly rest” November 17, 2012 with her family surrounding her.

She was a faithful, devoted wife, loving, giving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a treasured mother-in-law.

She loved her Lord and was a faithful servant as church member, women's ministry leader, Sunday school teacher and an example to all the young ladies of her church and family. Mary was a devoted and faithful member of SouthView Church and was a former member of the Montcalm IPHC for over 60 years, where she faithfully served her Lord.  

In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walton E. Black; brother, Buddy Conlee; sisters, Pauline Tabor, Virginia Helmandollar, Helen Belcher, Nancy and Arbutus Conlee, Eunice Mathena, Violet Conlee and Charles Conlee Jr. who both died in infancy; and “Devoted Best friend” Ethel Graham.       

She is survived by; Two daughters: Wilma Jean Hampton who was also her devoted and loving caregiver of Bluefield, W.Va., Cheryle Arleen Compton and husband Dave of Bluefield, W.Va.; two sons: Rev. James E. Black and wife Connie of Bluefield, W.Va., Larry Joe Black of Bluefield, W.Va.; sisters-in-law: Margaret “Cecil” Conlee, Dorothy Black, Nina Black; seven grandchildren: Teresa Sargent and husband Michael “Sarge”, Dwight Hampton and wife Rhonda, Beverly Shrader and husband Steve, Princess Fogus and husband Marty, Eddie Black and wife Beth, Marty Joe Black, Craig Thompson; thirteen great-grandchildren, eleven great-great-grandchildren. Her extended family of twenty-two grandchildren and nineteen great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, W.Va. where the Rev. Bernard McBride and the Rev. R.C. Turner will officiate the funeral service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va. where grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
