FREEBURN, Ky. —
James Ernest “Mountain Man” Boyd, 72 years of age, of Freeburn, Ky., formerly of Vansant, Va., went to be with the Lord, Friday, February 8, 2013 at the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, Ky., following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Francis Marion Fanning and Ethel Jackson Boyd.
He was a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was a member of the Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was a retired coal miner and member of U.M.W.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Madeline Boyd and Myrtle Wagner; and two brothers: Teddy Wayne Boyd and David Boyd.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Betty Sturgeon Baker Boyd, Freeburn, Ky.; five sons: James Bryan (wife Kim) Boyd of Leemaster, Va., Michael Leon (wife Nita) Boyd of Vansant, Va., Darell Gene (wife Rita) Boyd of Vansant, Va., Bradley Dean (wife Joanna) Boyd of Grundy, Va., Ricky Allen (wife Amy) Boyd of Christiansburg, Va.; four sisters: Martha May of Freeburn, Ky., Marie (husband Glenn) Charles of Vansant, Va., Kathleen Lockhart of Vansant, Va., Dorothy (husband Robert) Hibbitts of Vansant, Va.; one brother: Jennings (wife Audrey) Boyd of Bishop, Va.
Also, survived by 11 grandchildren: Lindsey Boyd, Sydney Boyd, Brandon Boyd, Justin Boyd, Zachary Boyd, Logan Boyd, Matthew Boyd, Michael Boyd, Sarah Boyd, Mason Boyd and Tori Boyd; one great-grandson: Conner Boyd.
Funeral services for James Ernest “Mountain Man” Boyd will be conducted Monday, February 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jimmy Lee Smith and other Primitive Baptist elders officiating with burial to follow in the F.M.F. Boyd Cemetery, Boyd's Ridge, near Vansant, Va.
Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Sunday at 6:00 p.m. with services at 7:00 p.m.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Church, Philip Cook, Jeff Horn, Jerry Clevinger, James “Teaberry” Hess, and brothers-in-law.
