PRINCETON —
Steve C. Coutroulis, 89, of 247 Boggs St., Princeton, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2012 at the Princeton Community Hospital.
Steve was born on July 4, 1923 in Tarpon Springs, Fla. (with birth certificate recorded the following day) to the late Maria Castrinos Coutroulis and Chris Coutroulis.
He was a graduate of Tarpon Springs High School, and a World War II veteran, inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force in January 1943 at Camp Blanding, Fla. Prior to his induction, he held a civil service job working on Big Bombers in Sebring, Fla. He was a graduate of Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanical School, Los Angeles, Calif., and served with the 33rd Mobile Repairs and Reclamation Squadron (H) working on bombers and fighter planes in the European theater, and assembling gliders used to support the D-day invasion. He was stationed at Bristol and Nottingham, England, Paris and Orleans, France and in Belgium. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Throughout his career, he owned and worked in a variety of businesses ranging from dry cleaning to aircraft manufacture, gift shop retailing, and food and restaurants, owning a diner in New Jersey. He was the founder of two wholesale produce companies in New Jersey and Florida and spent the bulk of his career in those businesses, retiring at the age of 77.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and loving mother of his two sons, Esther Caravitis Coutroulis; and three sisters, Lula Kouremetis, NIckie Maillis and Helen Lambrianos.
A lifelong Greek Orthodox Christian, since moving to Princeton and while in good health, he attended the First Baptist Church in Princeton and enjoyed talking and meeting with members of the congregation.
Steve leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Loretta Ann Hurst Coutroulis; sons, Chris Steven Coutroulis (Jamie) and Jeffrey Todd Coutroulis of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Alec James Coutroulis and Taylor Cara Coutroulis of Tampa, Fla.; Calliope Coutroulis, sister and only survivor of his immediate family of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; brothers-in-law, Nick Siomkos of Thessaloniki, Greece, Frank (“John”) Caras of Atlanta, Ga., and Onsby M. Hurst of Princeton; sister-in-law, Mona H. Robertson of Princeton; his and the family's good friend whom he often referred to as his “third son” Arthur Cohen of Chevy Chase, Md.; nieces and nephews, Theodore and Chris Lambrianos (Penny), Val and Rob (Diane) Siomkos, Athena Siomkos Johnson, Todd Caras, and Stacy Adams; and special young lady and family member, Breanna Wirtz of Princeton.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 450 Courthouse Road, Princeton, with Pastor David Dockery officiating. Following the service Military Rites will be held.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013.
