WILLIAMSBURG, Va —
Pauline Virginia Shumate Spence passed to eternal joy on January 19, 2013 at age 92. She was residing in Williamsburg, Va., where she lived with her only child Sarah Kaye Spence Avellar and son-in-law, Joseph W. Avellar.
Formerly of Bluefield, Va., she was the wife of the late Thomas Franklin Spence, who died in November 1982. Born January 22, 1920 in McComas, W.Va., she was the only daughter of the late William T. Shumate and Addie Mae Gilmore Shumate.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her four brothers, Stanley, Woodrow, William R. and Henry D. Shumate, as well as niece, Vickie Hammack and nephew, Donald Shumate.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law of Williamsburg, Va.; and granddaughter (by marriage), Sarah Alyce Avellar of Washington, D.C. Survivors also include many extended family members: Cousins, Betty and Frances Moody of Princeton; nieces: Dianna (Mrs. Danny Alvis of Athens), Theresa Williams (Florida), Marie Phipps (Wales, England), Sharon Ellis (Wales, England), and nephews, Larry Shumate (Princeton), Danny Shumate (Florida), Billy Shumate (Texas) and Randy Shumate (Ohio).
Pauline was a person of great faith and was always very active in her church. Until 1982, she was a Charter Member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va., where she taught Sunday school and was an officer in the Methodist Women. She was also circle leader in her Presbyterian Churches in Vienna, Va. and Atlanta, Ga., where she moved with her daughter and son-in-law. She had been a member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church since 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Kenneth Sprinkle officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour on Wednesday. Following the graveside service, dinner will be served in Bluefield, Va. for family and friends.
