RICHLANDS, Va. —
Carl McGlothlin, age 89, of Richlands, Virginia, beloved husband of Reba (White) McGlothlin, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family members, following a brief illness.
He was born in the Page area of Garden Creek, Virginia on December 29, 1923 to the late Linkous Howard and Della Ellis McGlothlin. Carl had lived most of his life in the Richlands area. He worked for Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation for 42 years before retiring.
Carl was an incredibly talented man and an inspiration to all who knew him. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran, having fought in five major battles including the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland. He was a devoted member of the Casey-Shortt Veterans of Foreign War Post #9640.
Carl was a founding member of the First Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Richlands. He most currently was a member and senior deacon of the Fountain of Joy Church in Pounding Mill. He especially loved singing in the choir and playing his mandolin. Carl's hand-crafted picture frames appear in many homes and businesses throughout the region. He was an avid archer, hunter and fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Lee McGlothlin.
He is survived by: His wife of 67 years, Reba (White) McGlothlin of Richlands, Va.; daughters: Carla Jean Morrell and husband Rick of Bristol, Tenn., Lynn McGlothlin Kinder and husband Robert of Bluefield, Va.; son, Aaron Lee McGlothlin of Portsmouth, Va.; grandson, Ronald Lee Woody and wife Lisa of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter, Krysta Denise Kinder of Bluefield, Va.; sisters: Ruth Slate of Chesapeake, Va., Virginia Christian and husband Dale of Bluefield, Va., Maxine Brazil and husband George of Chesapeake, Va.; loving sisters-in-law: Ginger Mustard of Tazewell, Va., Nell White of Marion, Ind.; brother-in-law, Douglas White of Wabash, Indiana, as well as several loving nieces and nephews also survive him. A host of friends also survive him along with the members of the Fountain of Joy Church who have been such a blessing to the family with their love and support.
Funeral services for Carl McGlothlin will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Bishop Tom and Pastor Judy McKnight. Special remarks will be made by Carl's close friend, the Rev. Stafford Compton. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Paul Hurley, Ralph Ray, Perry McCoy, Ron Toney, Roy Joyce and Fred Christian. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Whited, Robert Whitt, Charlie Robinette, Bobby Addison, Jimmy Compton and Hobert Vandyke. Military rites will be conducted by the Casey-Shortt Veterans of Foreign War Post #9640. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m.
