McDOWELL —
Doran Gene Shupe, age 84, of McDowell, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Wednesday night, November 21, 2012, at the Golden Harvest Center, Welch Community Hospital, after a long illness. Born December 28, 1927 in Mountain City, Tenn., he was the son of the late David Garfield Shupe and Nancy Gentry Shupe.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the McDowell United Methodist Church, McDowell, W.Va., and a retired coal miner from Eastern Associated Coal Keystone No. 1, after 40 plus years of service. He was a resident of McDowell, W.Va. most of his life and was the last surviving member of his immediate family
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Piercy Shupe in February 2006; five brothers and five sisters; and a son-in-law, Dennis Christian in 2008.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Three daughters, Rebecca Christian and husband Doug of McDowell, W.Va., Doreen Christian of Gilliam, W.Va., Belinda Shupe of McDowell, W.Va.; one son, Bernie Shupe of Northfork, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Kevin Christian and wife Stephanie of Florida, Eric Christian and wife Kelli of Charlotte, N.C., Stephanie Rowe and husband Tim of Gilliam, W.Va., Denise Church of Gilliam, W.Va., Kristen Shupe of Princeton, W.Va.; seven great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Brandon, Alyssa, Skylar, Jaela, Raylee, and Breaker; a host of nieces, nephews; and other extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Saturday), November 24, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Northfork, W.Va. with the Rev. Mark Smearman and the Rev. Curtis Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va. where military graveside services will be conducted by Mercer County Veterans Council and the W.Va. National Guard Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Sammy Young, Jimmy Mills, Charlie McKinney, Gary Dove, Jesse East, and Tommy Henderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Nick Mason and Jim Widener.
Friends may call today (Saturday) at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Northfork, from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
