MOUNT HOPE —
Augustus (Gus) McVey, 91, of Mt. Hope, passed away Monday, October 29, 2012 at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley. Born June 10, 1921 at Ansted near the Hawk’s Nest State Park to the late James Harvey Alderson McVey and Nora Beth Griffith McVey.
Gus was a long-time member and usher of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill. He was a 64-year member of the Hayden Masonic Lodge No. 113, A.F. & A.M. of Ansted. Gus enjoyed his volunteer work at the Food Pantry for the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association. Gus never met a stranger; he was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, friends, or others he came in contact with.
Gus retired in 1984 as a coal truck driver for Perry-Hylton and Cannelton Coal Industry. Also, Gus was the former owner of McVey’s Insurance Agency of Ansted.
Besides his parents, Gus was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his nine children, Beatrice Frieda (Lowry) McVey in 1997; others who also went to be with the Lord include his son, Jennings Clyde McVey in 1942; grandson, Michael Aaron Crist in 1965; brothers, James Ira, Raymond, and Samuel Aaron McVey; and one sister, Elsie McVey Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Samuel A. (Lynn) McVey, Vicki Markivich (Andy) and Nora Crist all of Ansted, Tom (Bonnie) McVey of Princeton W.Va., Sharon Fox of Proctorville Ohio, James Conrad (Rita) McVey, Richard (Debbie) McVey, and Melody Wallen (Steve) all of Beckley; sisters, Irene Fitzwater Campbell and Opal Stover of Ansted; and a favorite brother-in-law, Fred Lowry of Oak Hill.
His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 East Main Street, Oak Hill where visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today and where the funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Jim Franklin and Pastor Gary Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Garden, Victor with full Masonic rites.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Prosperity First Baptist Church Building Fund, 308 Prosperity Road, Beckley, WV 25801 or to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, W.Va. 25801.
