ALDERSON —
Pastor Phil Combs, age 85, of Alderson, W.Va., formerly of Bandy, Va., and Hartwell, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, W.Va., following a short illness.
Born March 12, 1927 in Coalwood, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Dixie and Nora Mae Tilley Combs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul David Combs; a daughter, Deanna Jo "Dee" Combs; four brothers, Floyd Combs, Raymond Combs, Dixie Combs, and Garnold Combs; and two sisters, Helen Hall and Nell Rand.
Pastor Combs was a minister for the Church of God for 60 years and was currently serving as Pastor at the River of Life Church of God, Alderson, W.Va. He had served as Pastor of the former Alderson Church of God and the River of Life Church of God in Alderson, W.Va., for the past 28 years. He was also a retired coal miner, foreman, and superintendent, having worked in the coal mines for 44 years. Pastor Combs was a World War II Veteran, having served in the United States Navy for three and a half years. He was a member of the Alderson Ministerial Association. Pastor Combs was a very strong and loving family man who dedicated his life to serving God.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Josephine Honaker Combs of Alderson, W.Va.; three sons, Phillip Combs and his wife, Cathie, of Chilhowie, Va., David Combs and his wife, Rhonda, of Fort Spring, W.Va., and Justin "Groundhog" Combs and his wife, Nicole, of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Karen Eckman and her husband, Mike, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Thressa Mitchell of Woodbridge, Va.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be Friday, November 2, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the River of Life Church of God, Alderson, W.Va., with Pastor Stewart Farley and Pastor Anthony Carter officiating. Friends may call Friday, November 2, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the River of Life Church of God, Alderson, W.Va.
Funeral services will also be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Bluefield, Va., with Pastor Stewart Farley and Pastor Anthony Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va. Friends may call Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Bluefield, Va.
Serving as pallbearers will be the Men of the River of Life Church of God, Alderson, W.Va.
