CEDAR BLUFF, Va. —
Ola Mae McCoy Sparks, age 88, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away Friday, November 2, 2012 in Tazewell, Virginia following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Jasper Newton and Elizabeth Lowe McCoy, former Tazewell County residents. Ola had worked in the Woolen Mill during World War II, making blankets for the soldiers and later became a full-time wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to care for and spend time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Hazel Pruitt, Addie Altizer, Maggie Nester, Juanita Wingo and Nannie Wingo Asbury along with one brother, Jay McCoy. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Her loving husband, Joe L. Sparks of Cedar Bluff, Va.; her sons: Joe L. Sparks Jr. and wife Pamela Denise of Christiansburg, Va., Newton Monroe Sparks and wife Teresa Charlene of Swords Creek, Va.; grandchildren: Jodie Suzanne Diz, Chyril Ann Sparks, Marcus Monroe Sparks and Tara Lee Fox along with one great-grandchild, Renthy Monroe Fox. Also surviving are her caretakers from Golden Age Retirement and Heritage Hall, along with a host of family and friends. Ola will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services for Ola Mae Sparks will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Sam Altizer officiating. Entombment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
A visitation will be held, Sunday evening from 6:00- 9:00 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
