ELGOOD —
Carson Irvin “Preacher” Hazelwood, 79, of the Lovern Road in Elgood, died Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Lewis-Gale Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, Va. Born November 15, 1932 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Carson Hazelwood and Myrtle May Gunter Hazelwood.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving from 1953 to 1956 during the Korean War and was a life-long resident of the Elgood area. He retired July 1, 1991 from the Norfolk Southern Railroad as a welder. Preacher loved to read his Bible and when able play his guitar and sing. When his health permitted he attended the Wesleyan M.E. Church on Athens Road. Preacher was an avid gun trader and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ronnie Gail Sisk and Wilma Beth Cox; one brother, Charlie Hazelwood; and one son-in-law, Dennis Rankin.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Mae Brown Hazelwood of Elgood; four daughters, Iris Rebecca Rankin of Elgood, Rachel Diana Martin and Sarah Naomi Martin both of Narrow, Va., and Martha Ann Hazelwood and husband “Bunkie” of Athens; one son, John Mark Hazelwood and wife Robin of Glenwood Park; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Eugene Hazelwood and wife Charlotte, of Rich Creek, Va. and Dana W. Hazelwood and wife Charlotte of Elgood; and one sister-in-law, Renee Hazelwood of Princeton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Mt. View Community Church in Elgood with Pastor David Kopp and Pastor William Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Elgood Cemetery with the Mercer County Veterans Council and the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
Serving as pallbearers will be Abdella Shady, Jason Warren, Jonathan Martin, Devon Morris, Danny High and Richard Nowlin. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Goffrey, Carson “Buddy” Nowlin, Kevin Martin and Brian “Bunkie” Hazelwood.
Friends may call at Fredeking Funeral Service in Oakvale from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2012 (today) and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Fredeking Funeral Service in Oakvale is serving the Hazelwood family.
