BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Elva Miles Lockhart of Bluefield, Va. died on October 15, 2012.
She was born on Sept. 28, 1920 in Keystone, W.Va. to Asa and Sarah Miles who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death: Her husband, Benjamin F. Lockhart Sr., and seven of her eight siblings and their spouses, most recently Thelma Shrewsbury and husband Arnold of Salisbury, N.C., and her brother-in-law, Edward Poff of Bluewell, W.Va., and her close friend, Marion Peery, of Bluefield, Va.
Surviving her are her beloved sister, Stella Miles Poff of Bluewell, W.Va. and seven children: Sarah Lockhart Cromer of Tazewell, Va., Benjamin F. Lockhart Jr. and wife Hazel of Salem, Va., Eva Lockhart Gilbert who was her primary caregiver, of the home in Bluefield, Va., Judy Lockhart Brooks of Baltimore, Md., Terri Lockhart Webber and husband Eric of Rural Retreat, Va., Ferri Lockhart and husband Thomas Klatka of Roanoke, Va., Donald E. Lockhart and wife Robin of Charles Town, W.Va.; “adopted” daughter, Helen Ruble of Bluefield, Va.; “adopted” son, Raymond Amos and wife Pat of Kingsport, Tenn. Also surviving her are her grandchildren, JJ Cromer and wife Mary of Pound, Va., Christopher Cromer of Anchorage, Alaska, Christine Poarch and husband Joey of Salem, Va., Erika Skillern of Junction City, Kan., Robert Hollmann of Fayetteville, N.C., Nicole, Nathaniel, and Natalie Lockhart of Charles Town, W.Va.; and great-grandchildren, Zella, Sidney, and Bella Poarch, Courtney Skillern, Dakota Miller, and Benjamin Lockhart. Left to cherish her memory are her special friends, Donnie and Rhonda Hagy, the Glenn Peery family, Kathleen Stowers, the Suresh Patel family, all of Bluefield, Va., and Lisa Stinson of Tazewell, Va.
Elva worked and imparted wisdom at Stinson’s Grocery and The Country Store and More. Her remarkable personality and her giving spirit blessed countless lives. Her little known love of nature benefited many raccoons, possums, and especially skunks from the fields around her house. She was the organizer of sending cards and flowers on behalf of the Friends and Neighbors of Bluefield-Tazewell Road whenever there was a death in the community, and had her own card ministry through which she sent hundreds of cards over the years. She recently reaped that which she had sown when on her recent 92nd birthday she received 305 birthday cards. She leaves us a legacy of authentic, selfless giving to which we can all aspire.
Visitation will be held at Dudley Memorial Mortuary on Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with the funeral following, and graveside rites at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Steve Aker and Raymond Amos officiating. Pallbearers are Robert Hollmann, JJ and Mary Cromer, Nathaniel, Natalie, and Nicole Lockhart, Lisa Stinson, Kevin Hodock, RJ Nunley, and JJ Shrader.
Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va. is serving the Elva Miles Lockhart family.
