WASHINGTON, D.C. —
Marty Campanello, age 55, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Bluefield, Va., died of pneumonia Thursday, April 4, 2012. Mr. Campanello had suffered a paralyzing neck injury in Dec. 2011 from which he was rehabilitating. A 1975 graduate of Graham High School, Marty worked in heathcare administration for 34 years, retiring in 2009 as Vice President for Marketing and Public Relations for Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte, N.C. Previously he was Vice President for Communications for Vitas Healthcare Corp. in Miami, Fla., and Vice President for Strategic Planning, Business Development, Marketing and Communications for Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover, Del.
Marty was a graduate of Radford University (B.A.) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (M.S.), and pursued post-graduate study at the University of Michigan. He served as President of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, and President of the North American Public Relations Council. The author of two books and numerous professional journal articles on the subject of healthcare planning, administration and public information, and medical marketing, Marty also served prominently on a number of medical boards of directors and advisory committees.
Mr. Campanello is survived by his mother, Thelma Thomason Johnston and husband, Beaman of Bluefield, Va.; brother, Jack Johnston of Wytheville, Va.; sister, Carla Johnston Keene and husband, Donnie of Cedar Bluff, Va.; brother, Scott Johnston of Bluefield, Va.; brother, Brian Johnston of Washington, D.C.; and beloved niece, Caroline Keene of Cedar Bluff, Va.
A family visitation will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at Dudley Memorial Mortuary, 729 Virginia Ave., Bluefield, Va., (276 - 326-1141). A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Elizabeth Lambert, will follow at 3:00.
