Ellis Fred “Shy” Matney

DISMAL, Va — Ellis Fred “Shy” Matney, 83, of the Dismal section of Buchanan County, Va., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 at his residence. Born in Buchanan County, June 28, 1928, he was the son of the late Alvia H. Matney and Mary Scott Matney.

He was a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ, a U.S. Army Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict, a member of the Grundy Masonic Lodge 17 AFAM, heavy equipment operator and founder and employee of Matney Construction, Inc. “Shy” loved to work, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jean Boyd Matney; two brothers, Carl Matney and Tom Matney.

Ellis Fred “Shy” Matney is survived by one daughter, Anita Goss and husband, Jerry of Richlands, Va.; two sons, Terry Ellis Matney and wife, Cammie of Abingdon, Va., Shawn Allen Matney and wife, Summer of Bristol, Va.; one sister, Ellen Arrington and husband, James of Vansant, Va.; two brothers, Sonny Matney and wife, Betty Lou of Abingdon, Va., Paul Matney and wife, Ilene of Vansant, Va. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Tristan Matney, Colin Matney, Emalee Moore, Lydia Matney; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Ellis Fred “Shy” Matney will be conducted at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Keen Mountain, Va., Friday, Feb. 24 at 1:00 p.m. with Evangelist Mike Rife officiating. Entombment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. Active Pallbearers will be Herb Fields, Eugene Childress, Gerald Lester, Jerry Osborne, Vernal Boyd, Vernal Boyd Jr., Jerry Sexton, and Mike Boyd. Honorary Pallbearers will be Employees of Matney Construction, Inc., Special Care Hospice Home Health staff and special caregivers, Liz Justus, Zolina Coleman, Bonnie Deel, Donna Osborne, Crystal Hagerman, Brenda Bennett and Lisa Hagerman.

The family will  receive friends at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Keen Mountain, Va., Thursday after 6:00 p.m. with Masonic Rites to be held at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The American Cancer Society or The American Heart Association.
