Virginia Lee Morefield Landreth

MAXIE, Va. — Virginia Lee Morefield Landreth, 95 years of age, went to be with the Lord, Friday evening, Aug. 17, 2012 at her residence, surrounded by her family.

Born in Laural Bloomery, Tenn., March 2, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Gene Morefield and Pearl Chappel Morefield.

At age approximately 8, she accepted Christ. She was baptized in her Baptist church. She received her high school diploma from Big Creek High School and met Frank Landreth. Frank and Virginia were married on Oct. 31, 1936. Virginia attended church at the Old Harman School. She joined Harman Memorial Baptist Church (HMBC) in March of 1941, where she attended until the Lord called her home.

She worked as a waitress, as a nurse, as a salesperson in a furniture store , and, lastly, as a teacher for the Buchanan County Schools for 26 years. She started teaching at Home Creek with a high school degree. She taught and went to college during the summer and at night. She graduated from Pikeville College with a BS degree in Education.

She was a dedicated Christian. Her church roles included: The WMU President, Young Womens Association President, Girls Auxiliary Leader, Junior and Senior Women’s Sunday School Class teacher, Vacation Bible School worker, Teacher for the New Members’ Class. Virginia Landreth lived so that others could see Jesus in her life. She was a beacon of light for the Lord in this world, and gave others direction, strength, and comfort through her witness.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Frank McNutt Landreth; two granddaughters, Janie Landreth, Alisa Kaye Landreth; and one grandson, Steven Fletcher.

She is survived by one daughter, Glorianna Lee Fletcher and husband George of Maxie, Va.; son, Frankie Landreth and wife Gaye of Maxie, Va.; five grandchildren, Donna Looney of Breaks, Va., Dianna Hagy of Vansant, Va., Amanda Blankenship of Grundy, Va., Ami Shelton of Chatham, Va. and Mike Fletcher of Maxie, Va. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, Sarah Moody, Laura Maust, Davey Looney, Chase Looney, Marc Hagy, Derek Fletcher, Linsey Fletcher, Nicky Fletcher, Virginia Price, Anthony Scott, Austin Blankenship, Emma Blankenship, Jarrod Shelton, Angela Shelton and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services for Virginia Lee Morefield Landreth will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Harman Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Shea Shrader officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.

Active pallbearers will be her grandsons: Austin Blankenship, Anthony Scott, Derek Fletcher, Davey Looney, Jarrod Shelton, Marc Hagy and Chase Looney,

Men of the Harman Memorial Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the Harman Memorial Baptist Church after 6:00 p.m. Sunday. Evening services will be held Sunday and Monday at 7:00 p.m.
