Jimmie Lee Braswell 68, of Montcalm, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 from injuries received in an automobile accident. The family is being served by the Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco.

Donald Barry Cason, 63, of Route 2, Box 387-B, Bluefield, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell.

Dorothy Muriel Blankenship Craig, 84, of Narrows, Va., died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008. Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows is serving the Craig family.

Mr. Verlin Eugene (Gomer) Farmer, 51, of the Daw Road section of Richlands, Va., died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 from injuries received in an automobile accident near Weston. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Venida Frazier, 84, of Brunswick, Ga., formerly of Welch and Keystone, died Friday, Feb. 15, 20908 at Hospice of the Gold isles in Brunswick, Ga. Fanning Funeral Home of Welch is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Teresa Shrader Glosson, 35, of 5225 South NC 87, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. McClure Funeral Service of North Carolina is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence David Godbey, Sr., 71, of North Tazewell, Va., died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at his home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va.

Mrs. Mary E. Parker, 58 of Welch, who passed away, Saturday, February 16, 2008 at CAMC in Charleston. Arrangements are incomplete at Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.

Connie Elmore Bennett

CAMBRIDGE, Md. — Connie Elmore Bennett, 65, of Cambridge, Maryland, died on February 13, 2008.

She was born and raised in Princeton, West Virginia. She graduated from Princeton High School in 1960 and later moved to Washington, D.C. where she became a court stenographer and met her husband, Ron Bennett. They married in 1971 and moved to Cambridge, where they have since resided.

Her parents were the late Clarence C. Elmore and Louise Elmore, both of Princeton. She is survived by her husband, Ron Bennett, her daughter, Susan Bennett Stimpson, son-in-law, Daniel Stimpson, daughter, Tricia Bennett Getsinger, son-in-law, Matthew Getsinger and grandchildren, Caroline, William, Grace, Jack and Matthew. Her grandchildren were her heart's life and joy.

She is also survived by her sister, Christine Elmore West, her brother, "Sonny" Elmore, her niece, Lynn Bayle, and her nephews, Michael West, Thomas West and Samuel West, and her cousins, Linda White Renzi and Robert White.

A memorial service will be held at Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge on Saturday, February 16th at noon. She will be buried at her birthplace, Princeton, West Virginia, on Monday, February 18, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

There will be no visitation. Those attending services on Monday are asked to meet at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton by 1:45 p.m. or at the gravesite by 2 p.m.

Mr. Anthony “Tony” O'Dell Bostic

SWORDS CREEK, Va. — Mr. Anthony “Tony” O'Dell Bostic, age 45, of Swords Creek, Va., passed away Friday (February 15, 2008) in Weston. Born April 19, 1962 in Richlands, Va., he was a son of O'dell and Emily L. Kennedy Bostic. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1980 graduate of Honaker High School. He was currently employed as a roof support foreman at Heintzmann Corporation in Richlands, Va.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, James and Didema Bostic; and his maternal grandparents, Trula and George Kennedy.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife of 27 years, Deborah Bond Bostic of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Natasha and Hufford Joyce, II of Swords Creek; one son and daughter-in-law, Shawn and Deanna Bostic of Cedar Bluff; two grandchildren, Chadwick O'Dell Joyce and Luke Anthony Bostic; two sisters, Dena Anders and husband, Robert and Beverly Burke and husband, Johnny, all of Swords Creek, Va.; two brothers, Mark Bostic and wife, Robin and Jeffrey Bostic and wife, Patricia, all of Swords Creek; one half-brother, Allen Hubbard and wife, Dortha of Swords Creek; one expected granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Va., with the Revs. Barry and Debra Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va.

Pallbearers will be Lanny Miller, Calvin Dye, Dean Miller, Josh Hubbard, Tommy Wilson, and Hunter Joyce.

Dora “Lil” Lillian Carson

Born November 17, 1923 to February 15, 2008

GARY — Dora “Lil” Lillian Carson, age 84, of McDowell Nursing and Rehab Center, Gary, formerly of Elkhorn, went to be with the Lord Friday night, February 15, 2008 at the nursing center after a short illness.

Born November 17, 1923 in Upland, she was the daughter of the late James Malcolm Stoots and Bessie Mae Burnette Stoots. She was employed by Elkhorn Public Service, First National Bank of Keystone, and most recently Ameribank in Northfork, retiring at the age of 76. She was also employed at a bomb making factory in Elkton, Md., during World War II. She was a lady of great talents, teaching herself to drive by sneaking the family car out during the day and returning it to the same spot before Roy got home from work. She also taught herself to play golf and when no one else would play with her, her elderly neighbor, Kelly Dixon, would accompany her. She eventually became a good enough player that she won a ladies championship at Gary Country Club. With her competitive golfing days behind her, she turned her attention to teaching her grandsons the game she loved. A legacy that will surely live on in them. She was a long time member of the Elkhorn United Methodist Church, Elkhorn, where she was active in the guild. She was also a home room mother at Elkhorn Grade School and active with the band and athletic boosters at the Junior and High School levels at Northfork. She was a resident of Elkhorn most of her life, and had been a resident of the McDowell Nursing and Rehab Center, Gary, for the past 4 1/2 years, where she made many friends with the residents and workers.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Glenn Carson; one son, Roy Glenn Carson, Jr.; three sisters, Mae Stoots Hardy, Frances Stoots Brinkman, and Willie Stoots Hash; three brothers, James Stoots, Johnny Stoots, and Frankie Stoots; one grandson, Christopher French; and a special friend, Shirley Barton.

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Linda Meredith and husband Robert of Bluefield, Carolyn Kennedy and Ted of Raysal, Glenna Farmer and husband Jerry of Thorpe; one sister, Julia Ann Stoots Allen of Aberdeen, N.C.; a special sister-in-law, Pat Stoots of Aberdeen, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Tina Meredith Pittman of McLeansville, N.C., Robert G. Meredith of Kennesaw, Ga., David N. Meredith of Christiansburg, Va., Michael C. Meredith of Bluefield, Va., J. Leanne Hollyfield of Springville, Va., Jerry L. Farmer of Gary, Stephen D. Farmer of Thorpe, Glenna G. Erickkson of Thomasville, N.C., Karen A. Wood of Archdale, N.C.. Also 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday Feb. 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Northfork, with the Rev. Brad Blanchard and the Rev. Richard Meredith officiating. Burial will follow at the Iaeger Memorial Cemetery, Roderfield.

The family will receive friends Monday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Widener Funeral Home, Northfork.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jerry Lee Farmer, Stephen Farmer, David Meredith, Michael Meredith, Rob Meredith, and Kenny Hollyfield.

Sidney Ellis Green

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Sidney Ellis Green,Winston-Salem, formerly of Pineville went home to be with our Lord February 13,2008.

He was born on June 16,1953 in Kimball where he lived 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh L.Green & Corby J.England Green; his brother, Cecil Green; and sister, LoJean Lane.

Sidney was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by his wife, Patty Hamilton Green; daughter of the late Rev.Jackie and Marlene Hamilton. They each have two adult children from previous marriages and 7 wonderful grandchildren. They were baptised together at the North Welch Church of God in 1994 and attended the River Oaks Community Church in Clemmons, N.C., where they lived since moving to Clemmons in 1998.

Sidney was a UMWA coal miner who worked over 12 years at Maitland Mines and US STeel Mines. He also worked 15 years for Stevens Clinic Hospital of Welch Bluefield Regional Hospital & Princeton Community Hospital in Mercer County.

Sidney proudly served as a veteran in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge. He also served as city Judge in the town of Kimball for several years prior to moving to Wyoming County in 1993.He was working as a maintenance supervisor for Legacy Apartments Parr Investments)in Winston-Salem at the time of his death. He was loved and will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Sidney is survived by his two brothers, Charlie Green and Elmer Green, both of Pineville; and two sisters, Alice Faye Halsey and Kathleen Burks also of Pineville. His three remaining sisters were Pauline Derringer of Beaver, Violet Ford of Virginia and Bonnie Alfred of Georgia. Spouses are Jeanette Green and Thurman 'Moose' Burks of Pineville,David Ford of Virginia and Thomas 'Red' Alfred of Georgia. Sidney was a devoted and loving father who leaves behind two daughters; Barbra J.Green Jablonski of Winston-Salem and Susan Gail Green Mai (spouse Nguyen Mai). He was also the proud papaw of four wonderful grandchildren named Angela Jo Sexton, Amanda Green, Kristen Jablonski and Jordan Jablonski. Sidney was also kind and loving stepfather and pawpaw. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by Pattys two children Misti Tolliver of Kernersville, Shane Church of Clemmons; and three proud grandchildren: Nikki McBride, Kyle and Isaac Tolliver, also of Kernersville. He leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and a sister-in-law who loved him very much.

Sidney was loved by his neighbors as well where he lived for nine years.

Flowers and/or gifts can be sent to the North Welch Church Of God on behalf of Sidney.

A short memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2008.

Friends and relatives of the family are invited to the memorial service which will precede the funeral at 3:00 p.m. Roy Hamilton,Hurricane, formerly of Welch will be officiating.

Glenna Louise Patteson Rogers Hoge

BLUEFIELD — Glenna Louise Patteson Rogers Hoge, 89, of 1011 Heatherwood Road, Bluefield, died peacefully with her family by her side on Friday February 15, 2008.

Born February 7, 1919 in Tazewell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Robert W. and Pearl Jackson Patteson.

Glenna grew up in an old traditional Virginia family. She attended Radford College where she lettered in Basketball and received her teaching degree. She taught in a one room school house in southwestern Virginia.

After her marriage to Stanley Gray Rogers, II, she settled in Bluefield where she would become the ideal mother to Louise Ann and Stanley Gray and would form enduring and devoted friendships.

Glenna will be remembered by those who loved her for her loving, feisty, generous, determined, bright, and opinionated spirit.

A Golden Hokie for many years, Glenna took great pleasure in attending Virginia Tech football games. An excellent duplicate bridge player she achieved the lofty level of Silver Life Master. She traveled the globe with her family and friends. Safaris, a Madonna concert, dinner at Buckingham Palace, Glenna lived life to the fullest.

Deeply committed to family and friends, she will be missed.

In addition to her parents, Glenna is preceded in death by her, first husband, Stanley Gray Rogers, II; second husband, James French Strother Hoge; a sister, Lib Gibson; and a brother, Robert Patteson.

Survivors include; a daughter, Louise Ann Collins and husband Gerald; a son, Stanley Gray Rogers, III, and wife Susan; four sisters, Mary Stables, Cat Simmons, Wanda Powell and husband Bill, MaryAnn Moore and husband Bob; a brother, Ralph Patteson and wife Ann; five grandchildren, Charles Gray Haislip and his wife Bridgett, Michael Rogers Collins and his wife Crystal, Matthew Raymond Collins, Kelly Lynn Rogers Mann and husband Bonner, Stanley Gray Rogers and wife Amy; six great-grandchildren, Charles McKenzie Haislip, Raymond Kerry Rogers Collins, Annabelle Lynn Collins, Susannah Randolph Mann, Stanley Gray Rogers, Caroline Louise Rogers; and two very special caregivers; Melissa and Lisa who enriched Glenna's life in an extraordinary way.

Graveside services will be conducted at the Monte Vista Park Cemetery located in Green Valley on Monday February 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Ed Fisher officiating. Friends are asked to meet at Mercer Funeral Home by 10:15 A.M. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Noble A. Mitchem

LASHMEET — Noble A. Mitchem, 87, of Reese Harmon Ridge Road, son of the late Sam and Annie Bailey Mitchem, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2008.

He was born at Beartown (Wyoming County) and resided there for the first sixty-six years of his life. He spent the next twenty years on Reese Harmon Ridge Road where he was a member of the Lashmeet Freewill Baptist Church. The last nine months of his life was with his extended family at the Phillips Personal Care Home in Lerona under the exceptional care of Beverly and Larry Phillips and staff.

He was preceded in death by his spouse (Helen); two brothers, (Cledis and Cobert Mitchem); and five sisters (Edith Nichols, Velva White, Vallie Combs, Vivian Reed and Faye Reed).

Noble is survived by two brothers (Blonnie Mitchem and spouse Bertha of Princeton and Harry Mitchem and spouse Claudine of Brushfork); two sisters (Necy Mitchem of Bluewell and Ivy Mills of Mobile, Alabama); three sons (Danny and spouse Debbie of Princeton, Russell and spouse Wanda of Reese Harmon Ridge, and Jeffrey and spouse Betty of Bud Alpoca); five daughters (Ava Durham of Franklinton, North Carolina, Glenda Allen and spouse Tommy of West End, North Carolina, Joyce Thorn and spouse Danny of Blacksburg, Virginia, Donna Sizemore and spouse Harrison of Reese Harmon Ridge, and Phyllis Johnson and spouse Larry of Old Lashmeet Road); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he adored and was very proud of; and one special cousin (Wayne Bailey of Lashmeet).

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2008 at the Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton, West Virginia followed by the funeral service at 12:00 noon conducted by Jill Dishner, Pastor of the Lashmeet Freewill Baptist Church. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Jean Charles "J.C." Neff

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Jean Charles "J.C." Neff, 84, died on Friday, February 15, 2008. He had lived in Newport News for the past five months, and was formerly a resident of Richmond and Bluefield. Mr. Neff retired in 1974 after 30 years service with J.C. Penney Company. He also served in the U.S. Navy for three years.

Survivors include his wife, Sonia Neff, Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Alan Neff and his wife, Diane, of Plano, Texas, and Thomas Neff and his wife, Joyce, of Newport News; three grandchildren, Missy Neff, Michael Neff and Mark Kelly; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Neff.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, at Abundant Life Tabernacle with the Rev. Glen Jones officiating. Burial will be private.

Jeffrey Gordon Owen

CLEVELAND, Va. — Jeffrey Gordon Owen, 57, of Cleveland, Va., passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2008 due to a tragic accident. He was born on October 14, 1950 in Russell County, Va.

Jeff lived life to the full. He loved the Lord, and was brought up in Cleveland Baptist Church and attended Lebanon Community Fellowship with his family later in life. Many people knew him as a basketball player. In 1969 he broke the Virginia State Record when he scored 2,158 points. He went on to play college basketball at King and ETSU on full scholarship and loved watching the game to the end of his life.

Many knew Jeff as a fisherman. He grew up at the Clinch River and loved lake fishing as well, sometimes with friends, sometimes with a good catch and always haunted by waters.

Everyone knows the bond Jeff had with his family. He was a wonderful son to his mom and dad. His dad, whom he called Ralph, was a best friend to Jeff to the end. When he met Susie Meade on a cold December day in 1978, he met the love of his life. They had 28 years of romance, humor, passion and fun and on the last day of his life, he told her again that she was his valentine. Jeff loved his girls. Stacy will always remember his patience, his tender heart toward animals and drinking coffee with him in the morning. Betsy loved his hands, his laugh when he was really tickled and his profound love for the outdoors.

Jeff will always be missed.

To have known him is to have loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Susie) Meade Owen; daughters, Stacy Harman Lantz and husband Michael of Knoxville, Tenn., and Betsy Owen Balkcom and husband Dustan of Cleveland; parents, Ralph (Bud) and Mary Alice (Merg) Ashbrook Owen of Cleveland; and sister, JoAnne Owen Ramsey and husband Charles (Butch) of Horsepasture, Va.

Pallbearers will be Myrl Allen, Doug Artrip, Dustan Balkcom, L.D. Barton, Billy Cross, Larry Honaker, Michael Lantz and Tim Wallace.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gary (Boog) Campbell, Scotty (Moose) Campbell, Andrew Chafin, Bill Duty, Frank Gent, Stan Ferrell, Marvin (Shab) Kiser, Phillip Puckett, Ronnie Riddle and Roger Sword.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 18, at Lebanon Community Fellowship with Pastor Jeff Williams officiating. Interment will follow at the Hidden Valley Family Cemetery in Cleveland, Va.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 9:00 p.m. at the church.

Margaret (Tody) Pruett

RONCEVERTE — Margaret (Tody) Pruett, 89, formerly of the Old Bluefield-Princeton Road, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at Greenbrier Medical Center in Ronceverte.

She was born in Bastian, Va., and was a daughter of the late W.G. Kitts and Pearl Peak Kitts.

She was of the Protestant faith and, in addition to her parents, was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Homer Pruett; and by several brothers and one sister.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Hayes, Bluefield; son, Donald H. Pruett and wife Sylvia of Princeton; brother, Bob Kitts, Mesquite, Texas; grandchildren, Cy Pruett, Princeton, Tim Pruett, Wake Forest, N.C., Keith Hayes, Bluefield, Kelly Osborne, Youngsville, N.C., Brooks Hayes, Raleigh, N.C.; six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Roselawn Mausoleum Chapel in Princeton with Dr. Ed Pettus officiating.

Ellen Lavern Saunders

WILLOWTON — Ellen Lavern Saunders, 55, of the Kelly's Tank Community near Willowton died Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born March 13, 1952 in Mercer County she was the daughter of the late Lorenza R. and Sadie Viola Hoston Saunders. She was a 1971 graduate of Oakvale High School and was a lifelong resident of the Kelly's Tank Community. Ellen was retired from the Western Steer Steak House in Princeton and was a member of the Saunders Grove Baptist Church at Kelly's Tank.

In addition to her parents, one sister, Sharon Kaye Saunders; and two brothers, Lorenza R. Saunders, Jr., and Mark J. Saunders preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sisters, Darlene Blake of Kelly's Tank, Constance Saunders and husband Clifton of Bluefield, and Tammy Kidd and husband Ron of Beckley; four brothers, Ronald Saunders of Kelly's Tank, James Saunders and wife Soma of Manassas, Va., Brian Saunders and wife Tia of Fredericksburg, Va., and Tony Saunders and wife Teresa of Roanoke, Va.; cousins, Betsy Murphy, Patsy Hoston, and Debra Stevens; and two great-aunts, Victoria Ford and Flavella Hopkins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 18, 2008 at the Saunders Grove Baptist Church in Kelly's Tank with the Rev. Fred Carper, Jr. and the Rev. Ronald Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Kelly's Tank Community Cemetery.

Amanda June Smith

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Amanda June Smith, age 30, of the Mudfork area of Bluefield, Va., passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born February 1, 1978 in Tazewell, Va., she was a beloved daughter of Joel Thomas “Tom” Smith and Deborah “Debbie” Smith of Mudfork, Va. She was a 1996 graduate of Tazewell High School and attended Southwest Virginia Community College. Amanda loved life, people and her little dogs. She was a free spirit with a kind heart and she never met a stranger; she will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Hamilton and Ruth Lambert; and her paternal grandfather, Joel A. Smith.

Survivors in addition to her parents, include her sister, Amy Price and husband, L.J.; her nephew, Trey Price; her paternal grandmother, Marie Smith; all of Mudfork, Va.; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

TAZEWELL, Va. — James R. Spurgeon, 78, of Heritage Hall, Tazewell, Va., and formerly from Bluefield, Va., died Friday Feb. 15, 2008 in Tazewell, Va.

He was born in Bluefield, Va., and was a son of the late Cecil Spurgeon and Lillian Kitts Spurgeon.

Mr. Spurgeon was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, retired from Pemco after over 22 years of service and had served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1949. He was a member of the Bluefield, Va., VFW Memorial Post 9696.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alois H. Seabolt Spurgeon.

He is survived by his daughter, Christina Stiltner and husband Eric, Red House; brothers, Edward Spurgeon, Bluefield, Va., Richard Spurgeon, Kingman, Ariz.

In honoring his wishes he has been cremated.

There will be no services.

Ms. Lethia Jane Street

CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — Ms. Lethia Jane Street, age 78 of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Saturday February 16, 2008 at a Tazewell nursing home following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Buchanan County and was the daughter of the late William “Bill” McKinley and Rhoda Lilly Belle Blankenship, former Garden Creek natives. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was of the holiness faith and was a lifetime resident of the surrounding areas.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, George Elbert Street; her daughter, Jerlene Sue Street; her son, Larry Arnold Street; along with six sisters and two brothers.

Those who survive her are daughters: Judy Conley and husband Greg of Richlands, Va., Loraine Altizer and husband Roger of Cedar Bluff, Va.; son, Gary Donald Street of Cedar Bluff, Va.; sisters: Vida Street of Cedar Bluff, Va., Pauline Chaffins of Kentucky, Ola Gay Morris of Charlottesville, Va. She is also survived by four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends, she will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services for Lethia Jane Street will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2008 at the Rowe Pentecostal Church in Rowe, Va., with the Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Interment will follow at the Street family Cemetery in Rowe, Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will accept friends on Sunday evening from 6–9 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va.
