James Ernest Barnett Sr.
NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — James Ernest Barnett Sr., age 83, of North Tazewell, Va., passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at Duffield, Va.
He was born at Tazewell, Va., and was the son of the late Reece and Ethel Cregar Barnett.
He made his home in Tazewell his entire life and was a graduate of Tazewell High School, Class of 1942. He then went on to be a student at VPI studying civil engineering and was in the Corps of Cadets when he was drafted for World War II serving as Pharmacist’s Mate 2nd Class (Corpsman) for the 6th Marine Division. He was awarded the Silver Star for heroism during the fight for Sugar Loaf Hill on Okinawa in 1945. He was one of the founders of Riverside Block and Supply and part owner of Turner and Barnett Farms.
Survivors include: His Loving wife of 61 years, Mary F. Barnett; son: James E. Barnett Jr. and wife Martha Barnett of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; sister: Ann Barnett McMeans of Ft. Defiance, Va.; grandchildren: Jamie Barnett of Baltimore, Md., Cassidy and Garrett Barnett of Gatlinburg, Tenn.
Military Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell, Va. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at 10:30 a.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell, Va.

Ms. Rebecca “Becky” Ann Walters Boyles
MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — Ms. Rebecca “Becky” Ann Walters Boyles, 50, of Bradford Place, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at her home after a courageous two-year battle against cancer.
Ms. Boyles was born Feb. 26, 1957, in Mercer County, to the late Douglas Epperly and Catherine Rose Acuff Walters. She was a graduate of Bluefield High School, Bluefield, class of 1975, and a graduate of Marshall University, Huntington. Ms. Boyles was employed at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for the last 20 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mocksville. Becky was very dedicated and committed to several youth programs within the community; this is shown by her service on the PTA, Mocksville Rams Little League Football, Booster Club and Cheer Coach at Mocksville Elementary School and her four years as Davie Diamonds Coach.
In addition to her parents, her mother on April 8, 2007, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert D. Walters on Nov. 2, 2007.
Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Joyce and Amanda Reece Boyles of the home; a brother, William “Bill” Randolph Walters of Ormond Beach, Fla.; two nieces, Cindy Noel Walters and Whitney Morgan Greenen; and a nephew, Douglas William Walters.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, Mocksville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. Inurnment will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Route 52, Bluewell.

Lila A. Crotty
BLUEFIELD — Lila A. Crotty, 91, of the Mercer Nursing and Rehab in Bluefield, formerly of Lashmeet, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at her residence.
Born January 28, 1917 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Bud C. and Nana Archer Huffman.
Survivors include one son, Don Crotty and wife Janice of Highland Heights, Ohio; three grandchildren, Heather Crotty, Blaine Crotty, and Angie Estes; three brothers, James Huffman and wife Martha of Tampa, Fla., Blaine Huffman and wife Debbie of Florida, and Delmar Huffman and wife Beatrice of Bluefield, Va.; and two sisters, Betty Bragg of Indianapolis, Ind. and Lois Hendricks of Clearwater, Fla.
In keeping with Lila's wishes the body has been cremated and a service will be conducted at a later date.

George W. Hagy
ATLANTA, Ga. — George W. Hagy, age 80, formerly of Bristol, Va., passed away peacefully Sunday, February 10, 2008, surrounded by his loving family at Cobblestone Health Center in Stone Mountain, Ga.
He was born February, 22, 1927, in Panther to James Harvey Hagy and Myrtle Ellen Patrick Hagy. He was a loving and devoted husband of fifty-five years to Ruby Nichols Hagy.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Nichols Hagy and four children: Donna K. Davis of Radford, Va.; G. Michael Hagy of Atlanta, Ga.; Steven B. Hagy and wife Esther of Grundy, Va.; and Lisa A. Hagy of Atlanta, Ga. Four grandchildren, who were his greatest pride and joy, C. Chad Hagy and Stephanie B. Hagy of Johnson City, Tenn.; James M. Hannah of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Jason R. Hannah of Radford, Va.
He is survived by four brothers: Jess Hagy of Huron, Ohio; Dr. Ralph Hagy of Wardell, Va.; Jerry Hagy of Bristol, Va.; and Andrew Hagy of Richmond, Va. and two sisters: Helen Buckho of Ocala, Fla. and Mrs. Johnny Sloan (Linda) of Grundy, Va. He is also survived by his faithful Aunt Marilyn Cruise and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Myrtle E. Hagy and brother, Frank Hagy.
After serving in the military, he returned to Buchanan County where he was widely known for his twenty-eight years of work in the banking business being affiliated with Cumberland Bank & Trust, Grundy National Bank and Miners & Merchants Bank. He was owner and operator of Hagy's Coffee Shop for twenty plus years. In 1960, he was one of the original founders of Vansant Lumber Company. He was the owner of H&N; Egg Market of Royal City, Va. for fifteen years. He was District Manager for Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company and made the Million Dollar Round Table multiple times. He was a partner of Bluefield Broadcasting, Wolf Creek Golf Course and one of the founders of Modern Homes, Inc.
He served as past President of Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce, was a board member of John Flanagan Water Authority, a member of the VFW and the American Legion where he received his lifetime pin, a member of the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge, where he received his fifty year pin, a member of the Buchanan/Dickinson Shrine Club, where he served as past President and past Secretary/Treasurer. He escorted many families as a “Road Runner” to the Shriner's Crippled Children Hospital in Greenville, S.C. He was a member of Carvosso United Methodist Church in Abingdon, Va. where he was a Sunday school teacher.

BLUEFIELD — Betty Ann Kelly, 42, of Box 3605, Bluefield (Brushfork), passed away on Monday, February 04, 2008 in Montcalm.
She was born on October 15, 1965 in Peel Chestnut Mountain to Shelby Meadows Ogle and the late Paul E. Bogle Sr. Betty had been a resident of the Bluefield area for most of her life.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister: Elizabeth June Bogle; two brothers: Mark Anthony Bogle and Billy Ray Ross.

Major (Ret) Charles Walter Myers
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. — Charles Walter Myers, of 1019 Briarcliffe Drive, Colonial Heights, Va., formerly of Bluefield, where he was employed by the State of West Virginia Adjutant General's Office passed away on February 4, 2008.
He was born on January 30, 1937 in Howesville. His parents were George E. and Beulah Stone Myers. He was a graduate of Masontown High School and West Virginia University. He retired with combined 23 years of service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army National Guard State of West Virginia.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bill Myers; and one son, Brian Edward Myers.
Survivors are his wife, Brenda L. Myers; son, Col. John S. Myers and wife Lisa and granddaughter, Brianna of Harrison Township, Mich.; daughter, Stephanie Ann Frey and husband, James and grandsons, David and Daniel of Lexington, Ky.; daughter, Tonja Marie Jordan and husband, Ryan and granddaughter, Samantha Claire of Colonial Heights, Va.; stepson, Troy D. Lester and wife Kimberly and grandsons, Shane and Jeremy of Hardy, Va.; brother, David Myers and wife, Shirley of Savannah, Ga.; and three nephews, Michael, Greg and Anthony Myers and their families.
Charlie's remains were cremated and a Memorial Service will be held in Preston County, May 17, 2008 with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, per his request.

Mr. Tom M. Pickett Sr.
ELKHORN — Tom M. Pickett Sr., age 76, of Elkhorn (Crozier Bottom), went to be with the Lord late Monday night, February 11, 2008, at his residence after a long illness with his loving wife and family around him.
Born September 23, 1931 in Bluefield, he was the son of the late Walter Pete Pickett and Sally Laura Farmer Pickett. Tom enlisted in the Army at an early age, while serving his country, he was stationed in Germany for 4 years, where he served as part of the German Occupation.
Tom was a retired miner from Hawley Coal Mining in 1980, and was a member of Local Union 6196. He then joined the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection where he later retired in October 1996. He retired with over 43 years of service in the coal industry.
He was a former board member of Catholic Community Services for over 7 years, he was also a member of the Princeton Elks Lodge No. 1459. Tom loved golf, his friends and family, and enjoyed life and lived each day as a blessing from God. Tom lived in Crozier Bottom for 50 years and was of the Baptist faith, and last attended the Crozier Baptist Church.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Presley Pickett; his only daughter, Kim Pickett New; six brothers, Reverend Donald Farmer Sr., Mose Black, Leonard Farmer, Carl Farmer Jr., Eddie Pickett, and Charles William Pickett; three sisters, Peggy Farmer Ciocca, Doris Farmer, and Betty Pickett Duhamel.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife and friend for 16 years, Regina “Jeanie” Caldwell Pickett of the home; one son, Tom M. “Bubby” Pickett Jr. and wife Beryl of Bluewell; three beautiful granddaughters, Angela New of Hilliard, Fla., Misty Pickett of Columbus, Ohio, Jessica New of Kingsland, Ga.; one gorgeous great-granddaughter, Alison Pickett; two step-grandchildren, Melissa Warburton and her daughters, Megan and McKayla, David Warburton and his five daughters, Ariel, Amber, Autumn, Adria, and Ashlynn; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, and one special nephew, Andrew Sheybani. Tom was known to all the children as “Paw” and had two handsome godsons, the joy of his later years, Chase Mitchem and his siblings Alex and Nicholas, and Mason Frasier and his sister Grace. He was also especially fond of his porch buddies, Frank Hornick, Don Frasier, and Randy Cannady.
Funeral services will be held Friday (Feb. 15, 2008) at 1:00 p.m. at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Northfork, with the Rev. Jim Blevins and the Rev. Joe Lambert officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell where military graveside services will be conducted by the West Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard.
Friends may call today (Thursday) from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Widener Funeral Home, Northfork.

Juanita Arrington Repass
PRINCETON — Juanita Arrington Repass, 66, of the Colonial Hills Apartment, Athens Road, Princeton, died Sunday morning, February 10, 2008 at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottes-ville, Va.
Born December 8, 1941, in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Dewie L. and Elsie Turner Arrington.
Juanita was a graduate of Princeton High School, Class of 1959. She was an active member of the First Christian Church on Straley Avenue, Princeton, she helped to form the Bereavement Dinners for family members of the church, and she had served as a Deaconess and taught children’s Sunday school class for many years. Juanita loved serving her Lord; she was devoted to her family and church.
Survivors: Her husband of 48 years, Ralph E. Repass; two children and spouses, Edward Randall “Randy” and Laura Repass, Dana L. and William Nelson all of Princeton; grandchildren, Jake and Jordan Repass, Turner and Corey Nelson, Jennifer Neal; one sister and her husband, Joyce and Bill Phillips of Princeton; a niece, Penny Phillips.
On Friday, February 15, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., we will celebrate the life of Juanita Repass from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastors Gary Lyons and Bryan Elliott officiating. William D. (Bill) Sadler
ROANOKE, Va. — William D. (Bill) Sadler, 57, of Roanoke, passed away, February 9, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Thelma Sadler of Bluefield; and a son, William D. Sadler Jr. of Charleston.
Mr. Sadler was a graduate of Park Central High School, Bluefield State College and the West Virginia Business School of Charleston. He served with the 9th Marine Division during the Vietnam War. While serving he was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star. Mr. Sadler retired from Yokohama Tire Company of Salem, Va.
Surviving are his wife, Ae Sun Sadler, stepson, Joo Nam Lee of Roanoke; brother, Richard Sadler of Roanoke; sister, Diane Sadler of Albany, Ga.; special cousin, Al Davis of Radford, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, February 15, 2008 at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke by the Rev. Carl Tinsley and the Rev. Sin. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Culpeper National Cemetery.

Kenneth Lee Stafford
PRINCETON — Kenneth Lee Stafford, 75, of 2011 West Main Street in Princeton, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at his residence.
Born April 1, 1932 in McComas, he was the son of the late Miles Lee and Margaret Cleo Sargeant Stafford. He was retired with thirty-five years service from Kentucky Central Life Insurance now known as Liberty Life Insurance Company and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean War.
Kenneth was a member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton. He was an avid antique car collector and won numerous car show trophies throughout the years for his restoration work. He was a member of the Bluestone Antique Car Club, Yesterday's Rides and Antique Cars of America. He was a member of the Princeton Masonic Lodge No. 134, AF & AM, Bluefield Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Princeton Chapter No. 44 Royal Arch Masons, Bluefield Commandery No. 19, Knights Templar and the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple in Charleston. He was a strong supporter of the Appalachian Teen Challenge.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Frances Carol Scott Stafford of Princeton; one son, Kenneth Lane Stafford and wife Ronda of Princeton; one daughter, Julie Ann Crouch of Dublin, Va.; five grandchildren, Phillip Lee Stafford and wife Angie, Candace Crouch, Amanda Finkbeiner and husband Josh, Kalah Crouch, and Aaron Miles and his fiancée Roxanne England; one great-grandson, Caleb Finkbeiner; one brother, Beryl Kinzer of Bluefield; and two sisters, Betty Profitt and husband Benjy of Alexandria, Va., and Rita Jo Smith of Hagerstown, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 15, 2008 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery and Pastor Jim Rush officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council will conduct military graveside rites.

Wauline Underwood White
ROCK — Wauline Underwood White, 83, of Rock, had lived in Clayton, Ga. for the past several months, died Monday, February 11, 2008 at the home of her son, James D. White. She was the widow of Dale White.
Born November 14, 1924 in Mercer County, she was a daughter of the late William Wesley and Mary Eliza Davis Underwood. She was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother and a lifetime member of the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son: James D. White of Clayton, Ga.; one sister: Delores Underwood Pritchard of Douglas, Ga.; one granddaughter: Melissa Anne White of East Point, Ga.; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
