Ruby Webb Anderson Carter, of Carriage Drive, Beckley, died Nov. 19, 2006. Melton Mortuary of Beckley is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia M. Kinzer, 91, of 701 Garland St., Princeton, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006 at Princeton Community Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va.

Sandra S. Wiley, 66, of Sandstone, Va., formerly of Kegley, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 at her home. Arrangements are incomplete at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.

Leyer Edna Fuda

PRINCETON — Leyer Edna Fuda, 62, of Lot 52 Shadowwood Mobile Home Park in Princeton, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born Oct. 26, 1944 in Dott, she was the daughter of the late Charlie J. Stewart and Leyer Edna Powers Hogston. She was a retired supervisor in the Food Service Department of Princeton Community Hospital.

In addition to her parents, one sister, Shelby J. Stewart; and one niece, Amy D. Compton preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Carlo Fuda Jr. of Princeton; three stepdaughters, Sharon and family of Huntersville, N.C., Theresa and Lisa and their families of Sumter, S.C.; five step grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; one brother, Hobert Stewart and wife Nancy of Princeton; four sisters, Sue Compton and husband Danny of Glenwood Park, Darlene Thomas and husband John of Clarksville, Tenn., Mary Steele and husband Ray of Glenwood Park, and Jane Sellers of Princeton; mother-in-law, Inez Fuda of Glenwood Park; and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Mrs. Fuda's wishes the body was cremated and there will be no service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1808 Jefferson St., Bluefield, WV 24701.

George C. Hughes

NARROWS, Va. — George C. Hughes, 58, of Narrows, departed this life Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

George was born Dec. 18, 1947 in Pearisburg, Va., and was the son of Lorraine Hopson Hughes and the late Ross Hughes. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his baby brother, Randy, “Fly” Hughes, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Marie Epperly.

A 1966 graduate of Narrows High School, he was a 1967-68 Vietnam veteran of the Third Marine Division, and a very active lifetime member of VFW Post No. 6000 of Narrows. At the time of his death, George served as Senior Vice Commander and Past Judge Advocate. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 0141, and the Moose Lodge of Pearisburg. He retired from Bland Correctional Center after 30 years of service. George was a gentleman and very humble person, who enjoyed reading, camping and fishing. But the love of his life was his family.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth E. Hughes of Narrows; a daughter and her husband, Audrea M. and Chad Journell of Pearisburg; a son, George Ryan Hughes of the home; two grandchildren, Kinsey and Chase Journell of Pearisburg; a brother and his wife, Charles and Linda Hughes of Narrows; a sister and her husband, Rita and David Fleeman of Narrows; three brothers-in-law, Tommy Hare of Phoenix, Ariz., Bill Spurlock of Delmar, Del., Gene and Sue Epperly of Cary, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Juanita E. Hare of Phoenix; an uncle, Frank Hopson of Camden, Del.; an aunt, Wanda Hughes of Princeton; several nieces and nephews, Brian and Shelley Hughes, Chris and Charity Hughes, and Keith and Angel Fleeman, all of Narrows, Michael and wife Violet Hughes of Colorado, Kristie and Rick Williams of Newport, Heath Hare and Sabrina Hare of Phoenix; a cousin, Edith Webb of Raven, Va.; a special lifetime friend, Butch Hite, and others too numerous to mention.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 605 Memorial Boulevard in Narrows with the Rev. Dennis Martin and the Rev. Larry Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows with graveside rites conducted by VFW Post No. 6000 of Narrows, American Legion Post No. 68 of Narrows and American Legion Post No. 311 of Pembroke. Fellow comrades of the Vietnam Era and VFW Post No. 6000 will serve as pallbearers. Former co-workers of Bland Correctional Center will serve as Honor Guard and honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the First Christian Church in Narrows Friday from 6-8 p.m.

John R. Kennedy

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Mr. John R. Kennedy, 93, formerly of Mercer County, West Virginia and Fairfield, Ohio, died peacefully at Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville, Alabama, on November 15, 2006. According to his grand-nephew, Dr. David McMillion, who was with Mr. Kennedy at the time of his death, “Uncle Johnny died as he had wished, 'I just want to wear out and quit.'”

Mr. Kennedy spent his childhood in Matoaka, West Virginia where he was born on January 19, 1913, to Mr. and Mrs. John Andrew Kennedy. His mother was the former Mrs. Rosa Alifare Pennington of Ashe County, North Carolina. He graduated from Matoaka High School and received a B.S. degree from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia. He attended Marshall University and also received a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina. He was a member of Bluefield Elks Club # 269 for 67 years. Mr. Kennedy served in W.W. II and was stationed in Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. He lost most of his hearing when a shell exploded near his foxhole. He was returned to the United States and spent a year recovering in a veteran's hospital in South Carolina. Mr. Kennedy married Danna Musick in Tazewell, West Virginia, in 1950. Mr. Kennedy lovingly cared for his wife, a public health nurse, for the last three years of her life as she suffered from Alzheimer Disease, going each day to the nursing home to be sure she was getting the best care. She died in 1992. He served as a public health officer for health departments in McDowell and Wayne Counties West Virginia. Mr. Kennedy served 21 years in the Health Department of Butler County, Ohio, where he retired as the General Administrator. Mr. Kennedy lived in Fairfield, Ohio, until he moved to Huntsville in 2003 following a stroke.

He is also preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Mary Alice Haller; four sisters, Mrs. Edna Lilly Epling, Mrs. Pauline Peck, Mrs. Mable Sanders and Mrs. Marie Madar Lazenby, and one brother who died in infancy, Cecil Kennedy.

Mr. Kennedy is survived by his son, William Haller Kennedy, and his wife, Beverly of East Greenbush, New York; grandchildren, Kristina Kennedy Babcock, William Kennedy II, Karen DeMaria, Desiree Kennedy, Bridget Sarceno and Tracy Kennedy; great grandchildren, Jessica, Isabella, Dora and Tyler; and numerous nieces and nephews including his niece and surrogate daughter, Mrs. James (Pat) McMillion of Huntsville.

Mr. Kennedy was a devoted fisherman. He and his wife, Danna, made one or two yearly trips to Nag's Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for over 35 years. He passed on his love of fishing at Nags Head to many family members including his nephew, Tad Peck, his niece, Pat, and her daughter, Cynthia McMillion Owen of Denver, Colorado.

Mr. Kennedy's earthly remains have been moved to Princeton, West Virginia. The funeral will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2006 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Tom Hill, officiating. Mr. Kennedy will rest next to his wife and at the feet of his mother and father in the Kennedy plot of Woodlawn Cemetery in Bluewell where Military Honors will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kennedy/Lazenby memorial fund at Kee Street United Methodist Church, 311 Kee Street, Princeton, WV 24740. The interest from this endowment is used to offer emergency aid to the poor, ill and needy in Mercer County, West Virginia and the surrounding area.

Lillie A. Pack

GARY — Lillie A. Pack, 70, of McDowell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gary, formerly of Premier, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at the center. She was born June 7, 1936, in Winchester, Va.

She was a resident of McDowell County the greater part of her life, residing in Premier most of the time.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Pack.

Survivors include a cousin, Marie Hainer of Winchester, Va. Several close friends and neighbors mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at noon from the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch with the Rev. Rhodeena Hatfield, officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Bluewell.

Friends may call Friday morning at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to noon.

Nancy Katherine Ray

TAZEWELL, Va. — Nancy Katherine Ray, 73, of Tazewell, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born April 26, 1933 at Witten Valley, Va., she was a daughter of the late Charles Edward Puckett and Kate Rose Puckett. She was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson ”Sam” Ray; four sisters, Gladys McGuire, Helen Gillespie, Evelyn Davis, and Vicie Vencill; four brothers, Walker Puckett, Charlie Puckett, Edward Puckett, and Melvin Puckett; two grandchildren, Arvin Douglas Ray Jr. and Christy Ann Smith; one great grandchild, Austin Dale Ray Lee.

Survivors include one daughter, Lois Ray Smith and husband, Roger; two sons, Sammy Ray and wife, Teresa and Arvin Ray and wife, Barbara all of North Tazewell, Va.; four sisters, Pauline Meade of Richlands, Va., Mary Tatum and Virginia Tatum both of Richlands, and Rose Tatum of Cedar Bluff, Va.; six grandchildren, Roger Douglas Smith, Katherine Louise Smith, Matthew David Ray, Amy Michelle Lee, Brandy Lynn Burkett, and Jason Pauley; eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Lawrence Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens at Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Matt Ray, Roger Smith Jr., Terry Brown, Richard Lee, Kyle Puckett, and Charles Ed Puckett.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12:00 noon on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006.

Gertrude Taylor Spaulding

“Grandma Gertie”

ERIE, Pa. — Gertrude (Grandma Gertie) Taylor Spaulding, 97, of Erie, residing most of her life in Crystal, went to be with her Lord Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at her home. She was born in Goodwill on July 18, 1909, daughter of the late Ezra and Maude Hazelwood Taylor.

Gertrude was a member of Bluewell Church of God where she had sung in the choir; enjoyed gardening and flowers; and was an Auxiliary member of the V.F.W.

The widow of Hayden Spaulding, she is survived by a daughter, Shirley Kennett and her husband Gene, with whom she resided; one sister, Maggie Jane Taylor of Elkton, Md.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by four daughters, Rachael Hartwell, Mabel Brooks and infant twins Janet and Janice Spaulding; three sons, Newton, Kenneth and Roger Spaulding; two grandsons, Gene Kennett Jr. and Rick Spaulding; two granddaughters, Crystal Johnson and Virginia Lusk; a sister, Pearl Hill; and a brother, Henry Taylor.

Family and friends may call at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, Inc., 3431 Coal Heritage Road, Bluewell on Thursday (today) from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service there at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Sharp, the Kennett Brothers, and the Rev. Mike Hartwell, officiating. Interment, Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.
