TAZEWELL, Va. —
Alice Marie Patton Mullins, age 87, of Tazewell, Va., died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the home of her daughter in New Haven, Ind. She was born August 9, 1925 in Dooley, Va. and was a daughter of the late Linzy Earnest Patton and Ada Josephine Lytle Patton.
During her life she had worked in many jobs in several different fields: Welder, Postal Letter Carrier, Licensed Practical Nurse - State of Virginia, and factory assembly worker, and taxicab driver; but nursing was her passion. Mrs. Mullins began college studies in 1978 at the age of fifty-three and continued until 2010 at the age of eighty-five. She earned many certifications and completed several courses of study to include: Nursing Training from Tazewell County Vocational Center, Associates of Arts and Sciences in General Studies, Career Studies Certificate in Phlebotomy, Career Studies Certificate in Medical Coding from the Community College System of Virginia at Southwest Virginia Community College, Wytheville Community College and Old Dominion University. She was a member of the Tazewell Presbyterian Church and her favorite saying was “Never say you cannot do something.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Ellis; three brothers, Paul Patton, Silas Patton and Edward Patton; one grandson, Jimmy Lee Mullins Jr.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of sixty-one years, Emory Carl Mullins Sr.; six children, Judith Meade and husband, Emmett of Bluefield, Va., Emory Carl Mullins Jr. of Hampton, N.H., Jimmy Lee Mullins of Burton, S.C., Janice Marie Mullins of New Haven, Ind., Jennifer Louise Mullins of Monument, Colo., and Jacqueline Ann Wood and husband, Lyle of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Margaret Rachic of Buffalo, N.Y., Virginia Neiman of Sevierville, Tenn., and Juanita Patton of Rochester, N.Y.; one brother, Howard Patton of Lexington, Ky.; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
Funeral services for Alice Marie Patton Mullins will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Tazewell Presbyterian Church in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Greg Wood officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. from 2-4 p.m., today (Sunday), February 17, 2013.
In honoring her wishes, her body will be cremated following the funeral services and final disposition will be private.
