Velma M. Tucker

BLUEFIELD — Velma M. Tucker was called from labor to reward on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at Heritage Hall in Blacksburg, Va. She was born Dec. 16, 1923 in Boissevain, Va. to the late Luri and Zeta Morton.

Velma is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Thomas E. Tucker Sr.; and her sisters, Helen Carter, Ruby Boston, Jean Alexander, Fannie McBurney and Lucille “Lucky” Morton.

Velma was a faithful member of Saint Matthew United Holy Church in Bluefield where she served in many capacities including deaconess, mission, usher, Sunday school, choir member and “kitchen”. She was well known for her special gift of cooking. She also served as the president of the local and regional Interdenominational Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows Association and as the treasurer for the West Virginia District Home and Foreign Missionary Department.

She worked for the Feuchtenberger, Scott and Kemper families. Her additional community service included preparing and delivering meals to the sick and shut-in in the community, and feeding the homeless.

Velma is survived by her four children, Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Tucker Jr. (Jacqueline), Bishop Anthony M. Tucker Sr. (Shirley), Cecilia Tucker Myers and Dr. Shelia Y. Tucker; five grandchildren, Anthony M. Tucker Jr. (Kristen), Tia D. Tucker, Sakura M.C. Myers, Terri E. Tucker and Thomas E. Tucker III; three great-grandchildren, Shacora R. Tucker, Jordan I. Tucker and Nicholas A. Tucker; one sister-in-law, Juanita Tucker of Cleveland, Ohio; and one brother-in-law, William McBurney of Queens Village, N.Y. Velma will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and devoted friends.

Funeral services for Velma M. Tucker will be held at noon on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at J.H. Easley Tabernacle United Holy Church 109 Henderson St. Princeton, WV 24740 with the viewing at 11 a.m. with Elder Marquinta Cox and Bishop Dwight Palmer officiating.
