POUNDING MILL, Va. —
Juanita Marie Hoffman of Pounding Mill, Va., died Sunday morning, February 3, 2013 at the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va. She was 63 years old.
Born October 19, 1949 to the late William Piercy and Helen (Kennedy) Herbert of Elkins, W.Va., Juanita grew up a farm girl, with the brown sod of her beloved West Virginia between her toes.
A 1967 graduate of Elkins High School, Juanita earned a degree in education in 1971 from West Virginia Wesleyan College. She was wed on September 5, 1970 to her dear husband and partner in life Dennis J. Hoffman who survives.
Prior to moving to Virginia, she and her husband lived in Clarksburg, W.Va., and Youngwood, Pa. where Mrs. Hoffman worked as a teacher and later a prevention specialist through St. Vincent College.
Most recently, Mrs. Hoffman served as a teacher at Richlands Elementary School. She was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school for many years. At the time of her death she was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church.
Inside and outside the classroom, Juanita was a prolific teacher, modeling hard work, good humor, common sense, and Christian love for her students, colleagues and loved ones.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Robert Phares, of Elkins, W.Va.
Juanita is survived by her husband, the Rev. Dennis J. Hoffman of Pounding Mill and two children; a daughter, Lara and her husband Rev. Scott Hauser of Clarion, Pa., as well as a son, Rev. Scott Hoffman and his wife Ashlee of Columbia, Md. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Kylee Hoffman, Simon Hauser, Jackson Hauser, Natalee Hoffman and Lillie Hauser as well as two sisters, Bonnie Phares of Elkins, W.Va. and Nancy (Piercy) Ossorio of Loveland, Colo.
Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2013 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, February 9, 11 a.m. at the Richlands Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. William McCoy of Charleston, W.Va. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert B. Culp of Columbia, Md. An additional service of celebration with interment to follow will be held in Elkins, W.Va. at a later date.
